Report from No Borders meeting Thursday 27th Oct at Matilda

Magical Mystery Tour: Generally felt that it was a success. About 50 participants in 2 separate groups ( 5-10 people joined the tour as we moved about) and over 1000 tour guide brochures given out. Could have been better prepared: megaphones would have been good on both tours; pre-prepared questions and "hecklers"; some typos on brochure. Existence of the brochure and photo/video coverage will help others (esp Leeds and Nottingham) organise their own tours. We have a box full (800-900?) brochures left. Agreed to distribute a few to Winter Gardens, Central Library but generally best distributed around No Borders actions and meetings. Suggested that we advertise the existence of the brochure in pdf form (Ben is working on this) and email various organisations and student groups to see if they want to use our brochures.
Trade Union conference: UNISON is organising a national conference on 29th January 2006 about how to organise non-implementation of Section 9 of the Immigration Act 2004 (the one that gives councils the power to take "failed" asylum seekers' children away from them). Agreed to support this - more details to follow.
Future Activities: Decided to organise a No Borders public meeting in early December. This would coincide with the publication of Steve Cohen's new book "Deportation is Freedom". Agreed to invite him, a member of the Sukula Family from Bolton, local Iraqi Kurdish asylum seeker/activist and a local supportive solicitor. Stuart and Alison to organise speakers and venue. Steve Cohen is happy to speak at meeting but- given his bad health he would need a lift to and from Manchester - perhaps we could invite some Manchester No Borders people who could provide Steve with transport.

Finally, we agreed to organise the meeting and any other imminent activities using this list rather than regular meetings. If anyone wants to help, suggest, or demand activities not already planned (or have a No Borders meeting) they can do it via this list.

Stuart
