[SSC] SSC Digest, Vol 16, Issue 25

Hello all,

Thanks, Roland, for your greetings! We will keep you in spirit.

Re: the BBC request. I definitely agree with Richard that we should take
some time on Saturday to sort out some approach to (a) responding to these
sorts of requests, (b) talking to each other about issues of common
concern, and (c) our understanding of the politics of time. The last can't
be dealt with in full, obviously, but I think it would be useful to talk
about.

We have been having multiple individual dicsussions, in different times,
about something we really need to talk about together, and I suspect most
people on this list aren't actually even online or back from wherever they
were during the day. So, on Saturday let's talk about how we can do this.

I would prefer not to be entirely pragmatic about it, and think less about
what need there is to respond to (as this is not an actual urgency) but how
we want to build practices of working together. I agree that it would be
nice to respond to the people who have asked us to speak with them; also
that I am not very comfortable speaking to the media and know Richard has
lots of experience with this. So on those fronts, I'm fine with it. I also
think that it would not be the end of the world if we were not featured on
the radio this week, and that it would be equally as interesting or perhaps
even more so next week when we will have more things to say. My concern is
that a sense of urgency about needing to seize moments of possibility, or a
sense of excitement about wanting to speak about the things we care about
and want to share, may in cases lead inadvertently to the closing down of
others' voices, or make some work public that is really in 'draft form', or
lead us into thinking superficially about things that really take time to
develop (including things that other people not in the process might wish
were much faster). So my question to raise for Saturday is less about the
BBC and more about how we discuss and make decisions, and what we think
about our own temporality.
I think this is ok -- it is precisely one of the questions that was bound
to emerge, and predictably in this way, so it will be good to start talking
it through.

Best,
Sarah
