[SSC] {Spam?} {Spam?} RUSSELL GROUP UNIVERSITY REACHES INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERSHIP AGREEMENT WITH OPEN ACCESS PUBLISHER SOCIAL SCIENCES DIRECTORY

fuck you. fuck pay to play.
obviously there are problems with journals having closed access (which
alienates and disenfranchises researchers from 'less developed'... less
wealthy... countries) but academics find ways to get around that. i can
share an article with a colleague easily, or gain access to a library with
journal subscriptions, but i can't exactly publish their work using my name
or institutional affiliation. there are plenty of open access journals that
don't use this model of fooling naive researchers into paying to get
information out. more established faculty aren't going to need to pay to
get their research out there, so this is only going to affect
non-permanent/non-tenured faculty and postgraduates, or researchers in
alternative institutions such as the SSC.
i'd ideally like to ask that this person be cautioned against making such
press releases on here, since their all-too-corporate project clearly is at
odds with models of open, participatory and equitable education. that being
said, if they're willing to explain how this site does not fit into a wider
assault on autonomous education, and how transferring costs from consumer
to producer of intellectual content does not constitute a farsical
injustice, i'd be interested to hear... i doubt it.
