[SSC] Financial support

Megan sticks her nose over the fence again:

This strikes at the heart of my earlier question: What do you see yourselves
as doing?

If at least part of your vision of yourselves is as a genuine alternative
way of managing learning and teaching, one of the things you have to address
is how you meet whatever costs you incur.

Using a 'part-time' model means that everyone involved, as student-scholar
and teacher-scholar, has time to earn a living doing something else and so
does not depend on SSC for support. Yet there are still costs: things like
your web presence, room hire for physical meetings (most folks don't have a
front room big enough to host a lecture, even if you could manage to have
3-4 students round for a seminar or tutorial), duplication of teaching
materials, etc.

The 'pay the equivalent of one hour's earnings per month' model seems like a
good baseline to give you some operating cash. Fine for those who HAVE an
income, anyway. Those who are noble enough to want to donate more should
indeed be able to do so. Once things are established, you'll probably have
quite a good idea of how much will be coming in each month.

That's how I see it, anyway. Provided nobody sees SSC as a way to make a
living - as teacher/administrator/tech support or whatever - and you are not
planning any capital purchase like your own premises, you can carry on like
this fine. Even if you eventually decide that you need your own bricks and
mortar, that can be the subject of a dedicated fund-raising project outwith
your day-to-day running costs.

Best wishes,

Megan

Hi all

In the same way that we aren't (at this time) chasing up people to make sure

they pay up when they become members, we probably wouldn't question someone
who chooses to pay £100 or even £1000 per month, if they so chose, would we?

We don't examine this information and think 'OK we should pay more attention

to the opinion of X, just because they pay more than Y'.....do we? Am I
being naive here?

Sandie
