  I think that the point is that kerry did not make enough of an effort in 
apealing to the poorest people in the US, afterall the poorest state in the 
union is mississippi and it ended up voting republican.  The other issue is 
that the democrats chose a candidate that has nothing in common with the 
people he is trying to represent.  Kerry is one of the most privileged 
people in the US and by choosing this posh north easterner as their 
candidate i don't see how they can hope to apeal to the working class 
catholics in ohio or the people who live in mississippi who are some of the 
poorest people in the united states.
  By choosing this uncharismatic run-of-the-mill "centrist" candidate to run 
for president and by him failing this will lead to the democrats surendering 
more ground and becoming more "centrist" (i.e. more like the republicans).  
The next candidate may well end up being a mormon from nevada who may as 
well be a republican.  Lets not forget that the democrat "centrists" have 
never truly succeeded because the democrats didnt gain control of congress 
in 1992, 1996, 2000 or 2004.
