October 2004
World premiere in the Crucible Studio
A Sheffield Theatres production
World Premiere
THE UNTHINKABLE
by Steve Waters
directed by Josie Rourke
Studio Theatre, Sheffield
Thursday 21 October – Saturday 13 November 2004
The first Sheffield Theatres production in the Studio
Theatre of the 2004-05 season will be a world premiere
of Steve Waters’ new play THE UNTHINKABLE, directed by
Josie Rourke.

It’s 2004 – Happy Birthday POLIS. The five founder
members meet to toast the success of their thinktank
in the remote Derbyshire farmhouse where it all began.
 Fifteen years of second guessing the next big idea;
fifteen years of shaping politics; fifteen years of
thinking the unthinkable. Once youthful idealists, now
influential thinkers, they remain always close
friends. But there’s a spectre at the feast and a
scandal is about to break that will ruin more than
their birthday party.

Steve Waters’ plays include ENGLISH JOURNEYS for
Hampstead Theatre, AFTER THE GODS for the Gate
Theatre, and WORLD MUSIC for the Crucible
(subsequently at the Donmar Warehouse). He is also a
Lecturer in Drama at Cambridge University.

Josie Rourke’s previous work for Sheffield Theatres
includes WORLD MUSIC and KICK FOR TOUCH. Other recent
work includes LOYAL WOMEN (Royal Court) and MY DAD’S A
BIRDMAN (Young Vic). She is joined by a talented
creative team that includes young Sheffield-born
Designer Lucy Osborne who has previously worked with
Josie Rourke at the HOTBEDS THEATRE FESTIVAL and
Lighting Designer Colin Grenfell whose work includes
LIFEGAME (National Theatre), MY DAD’S A BIRDMAN (Young
Vic) and KOSHER HARRY (Royal Court).

The cast comprises Nigel Cooke (THE PERMANENT WAY and
SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER, National Theatre) as Patrick
Cox; Aaron Neil (GUANTANAMO, Tricycle/The Ambassadors
and CYMBELINE/AS YOU LIKE IT, RSC) as Mark Rehman; Jo
Stone-Fewings (STILL LIFE and THE ASTONISHED HEART,
Liverpool Playhouse and TWELFTH NIGHT, RSC) as Oliver
Soper; Katherine Parkinson (FRAME 312, Donmar
Warehouse) as Fran Levy and Susannah Wise (THE PRIME
OF MISS JEAN BRODIE, National Theatre) as Maggie
Howson.
