THE MANSOOR HASSAN CAMPAIGN

Mansoor Hassan, campaigning journalist and NUJ member, faces deportation to Pakistan and further attempts on his life should he be sent back there.

As part of an ongoing NUJ campaign in support of Mansoor an excursion to the Home Office became a great success on Wednesday the 9th February when a coach load of supporters and union members left Manchester for London, with Mansoor and Aquila Hassan and their four children.

As an aside, the catering arrangements organised by Aqila were first class. Burger King at the Service Station passively assisted in this by providing premises for Aquila's clientele. The staff was either too busy or too preoccupied to notice that cuisine not normally associated with the fast food industry was being served there. Anyway, thanks Aqila and Mansoor for that. None of the demonstrators on the trip on the coach went without food and drink that is for certain!

The short demonstration outside the Home Office made a great impact. A forest of NUJ placards and a bit of chanting provided the required impact and a brief visit from the Bobbies.

Gerald Kaufman MP, and Jeremy Dear accompanied Mansoor into the Home Office where a letter from the NUJ on Mansoor's behalf was delivered to both the Home Secretary and the Immigration Minister.

After delivering the letter General Secretary, Jeremy Dear warmly congratulated and thanked the demonstrators for their support. He said that the NUJ would also support the forthcoming demonstration in Manchester on 2nd April.

He went on to say that, "We support Mansoor's campaign on humanitarian grounds and also on professional grounds since no journalist would be able to stand up anywhere without press and media freedom"

The rest of the stay in London was enhanced by the sunshine of a clear, crisp February afternoon. Everyone felt that this particular activity had been well worth the effort and were buoyed up by the consequent 'feel good factor'.

We should like to thank everyone on this email list for the assistance and contributions that have helped to make the NUJ Mansoor campaign so strong.
