Pressure on Brazil to drive economic growth and repay foreign debt 
contributes to the ravenous deforestation of the largest rainforest on 
Earth. However, perhaps more important is the internal pressure to 
generate welath for the Brazilian population. It is hard for the western 
nations to criticise Brazil for exploiting its resources while we 
enforce the national model in which countries are positively demanded to 
amximise resource use, at the expense of the environment.
