[ssf] FW: Faslane 365 - next meeting

Faslane 365 is an inspiring plan for a continuous peaceful blockade of the Trident nuclear submarines base at Faslane, near Glasgow. (Home of our very own weapons of mass destruction.) We are hoping to set up a Sheffield / South Yorkshire / North Derbyshire group(s) to support this.

An initial meeting 10 days ago went really well - lots of enthusiastice peole, from a variety of areas.

It feels that a really good group will come out of it - and we're having another meeting - 23rd March - to get this going. Details are below, and a leaflet attached. Please publicise as widely as you can!

The Meeting
Sheffield / South Yorkshire / North Derbyshire is forming a local Faslane 365 group!  The next planning meeting is: Thursday March 23rd, 7.30, Sheffield Quaker Meeting House, 10 St James Street, S1 2EW. Come and get involved at any level you want.

The Background
All of Britain's nuclear weapons are currently based at Faslane on board four Trident submarines. Together they have the destructive power of 1,000 Hiroshimas.  The use of such weapons may seem unthinkable.  However during the Iraq war Geoff Hoon said Trident could be used in attacks against 'rogue states.'
Meanwhile the maintenance of the weapons impoverishes the NHS, schools, universities and other vital services. It seems likely that the government has already decided (in secret as in the past) to build a new and even more dangerous nuclear weapons system at a cost of £20 billion.   
Nuclear weapons pollute and degrade our environment, our economy, our international relations and undermine all our efforts to create a fair and sustainable world.  They affect us all. 

The Campaign
Faslane 365 is an inspiring plan for a continuous peaceful blockade of the Trident base at Faslane, near Glasgow.  Groups across Europe are making a commitment to maintain the blockade for a specific 48 hours from October 2006. Support, local publicity etc., will be as important as physical participation in the blockade.  The main demands are that Trident is to be taken off patrol and a clear timetable for dismantling the UK's nuclear weapons is to be made plus a commitment not to develop new nuclear weapons.
