Have you ever tried to design a poster using Word? Do you seem to end up
using the same women’s symbol/raised fist/tree with lots of roots on
everything? Break free, friends! Everyone has ideas, and this hands-on
session is about using the most humble of design elements – type – to
express them. Why type? Because you don’t just read it, you also look at it,
because you don't need to know how to draw to use it, because it rarely
costs anything, and once you know how to work with it, you'll be able to
design just about anything. In this intensive intro to graphic design, we'll
look at examples of powerful type-only posters. Then you’ll split off into
pairs and create your own radical, collaborative typographic posters by
riffing on hand techniques like stencilling and tracing. All this while
learning about basic design principles and how to make your graphics match
your message. We'll wrap by talking about how to apply these skills to
working with images. Please note that this is not a computer-based session.
Laptops are welcome, but computer skills are not needed!
