Subject: FW: Sheila McKechnie Awards

Hi,

We've been approached by the Sheila McKechnie Foundation
http://www.sheilamckechnie.org.uk. Theoretically they've just closed the
applications for the second round of campaigner awards (started last
year). However they want more applicants from a broader range of
campaigning groups and have asked us to help recommend to campaigners we
know that they apply.

They're looking for campaigners that stand out as individuals, but who
will still benefit from some residential training and mentoring tailored
to their need.

Can you think of anyone from your networks (yourselves included) that
might
be
interested? If so, please send them the following info. I guess they
should get in touch with SMF direct.

Thanks,

Matthew

============================================
What the awards offer is the opportunity to get free support and skills
development in areas specific to an individual's campaign. So if a
campaigner needs to develop e-campaigning skills or learn legal tactics
to further their policy issue, then we make this available to them
through the award support programme.

The awards provide a package of support that comprises the following:

 - one to one coaching on campaign tactics (the coaching is undertaken
by coaches with a background relevant to the winner's campaign)
 - mentoring from a senior campaigner (last year one mentor was a former
ForeignOfficer Special Adviser, another the former head of campaigns at
Christian Aid)
 - the opportunity to shadow a decision maker in their area (e.g. we
gave two winners the chance to have their first ministerial meeting)
 - coaching on specialist areas (one winner was given a session on how
to use the Freedom of Information Act to campaign)
 - participation in a residential skills development weekend with other
campaigners

The awards programme is preceded by an assessment that looks at the
opportunities and obstacles that exist in a winner's campaign area. The
support programme is put together on the basis of this assessment.

It is worthwhile applying because in 2006 The Foundation was able to
provide benefits for runners-up. So we paid for one runner-up to attend
an e-campaigning course. We arranged for another to have a mentoring
session with the Consumer Affairs correspondent at The Guardian.

Yours,

Dr Matthew Sowemimo
