I'm trying to do 2 things in gimp

1.  paste a new image into a layer.  I've opened the image,  cut the section
from it, and pasted it into first gimp document .. but it appears as "pasted
layer" in the layers window. How do I get into a "proper" layer

2.  I'd like to select a background colour and make it transparent.  How do i do
that?
