Are any of the creative commons licences acceptable? For preference I
use the creative commons share alike licence:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sa/1.0/
which allows free(in the free software sense) reuse and distribution but
imposes a GPL like licencing condition if you alter it - specifically:

If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the
resulting work only under a license identical to this one.
