Suspect you will want to go down the .coop route with poptel, as
spacebunny mentioned. But as it happened we were chatting domain name
registrations in irc.indymedia.org/uk the conversation (it's chopped a
bit) is below. First is on nominet .uk names. Then on registering .org
.net .com and then onto .uk names and back to features with .org .net
.com ones:-
18:03 <@ekes> unless you are a tag holder renewing direct with nominet
is VERY expensive
18:03 <@yossarian> what is tag holder?
18:05 <@zcat> how much was it
18:05 <@ekes> 80 odd quid direct if I remember
18:06 <@yossarian> yeah 94 actually
18:06 <@ekes> like a fiver from a tag holder
18:07 <@ekes> tagholders are people who pay nominet a lot of money to be
able to automatically register .uk domain names
18:07 <@ekes> they get charged a small fee for doing each individual
registration
18:07 <@ekes> it usually costs about 5 pound a year for a uk domain name
18:07 <@ekes> .co.uk .org.uk
18:08 <@zcat> .me.uk too
18:08 <@ekes> however you can buy direct from nominet - but they don't
like doing buisness with individuals
18:08 <@ekes> so they charge a fortune :-(
18:08 <@ekes> you can change the tag holder of a domain (and hence who
charges for it) pretty easily
18:13 <@zcat> hey ekes where is the best place to get a name eg if i
want zcat.org ??
18:14 <@zcat> and how can u get one for more than 2 years
18:14 <@chrisc> zcat: gandi.net
18:14 <@ekes> for .org .net .com I use godaddy but you need to arrange
own dns then - I believe lots of people use gandi
18:14 <@chrisc> pay them more
18:14 <@chrisc> yep, you cn used gandi's own dns
18:14 <@chrisc> riseup recomend gandi
18:14 <@ekes> .uk is only in 2 year blocks and nominet only takes it in
2 year bits I think
18:14 * chrisc have a gandi tag
18:15 <@ekes> .org you can just do like years and years and years
18:15 <@zcat> so when u regester who does the dns
18:15 <@chrisc> you can choose, use your own or use gand's dns
18:16 <@zcat> cause jebba did the zcat at his domain for me
18:16 <@zcat> dns
18:17 <@ekes> zcat.org zcat.com zcat.net have gone already
18:17 <@ekes> zcat.co.uk available
18:17 <@zcat> ahhhhhhh
18:17 <@zcat> :(
18:17 <@zcat> how about .uk
18:17 <@ekes> zcat.org.uk avaiable
18:18 <@zcat> ohhhh
18:18 <@ekes> zcat.me.uk available
18:18 <@yossarian> hahahah
18:18 <@yossarian> you are bending zcat all out of shape with this ekes
18:19 <@zcat> what? yossarian
18:19 <@zcat> lol
18:19 <@yossarian> aaahhhhhhhh --- ooooooohhhhhhh
18:21 * ekes notes it would cost 9.99 for 2 years with
freeparking.co.uk (they do dns) - but chrisc would be better I would
think - fwiw
18:22 <@ekes> btw does anyone mind me sending an edited bit of this
conversation to aktivix-discuss (as Dan asked a similar question)
18:31 <@bunny> chrisc: why do you still use gandi.net when joker much
cheaper?
18:31 <@zcat> just thought id get it regestered first
18:31 <@bunny> transfering .org from gandi.net to joker.com before
renewal is easy
18:32 <@bunny> also do not lost any paid for time
18:32 <@ekes> bunny: joker do dns?
18:32 <@bunny> can do at any time and just extends by a year
18:32 <@bunny> joker.com do exactly same as gandi.net
18:32 <@bunny> but inferface a bit different
18:32 <@bunny> in fact they allow one to add raw stuff to dns
18:33 <@bunny> as well so can ad SFD
18:33 <@ekes> oh nice :-)
18:33 <@bunny> only thing they do that gandi does better
18:33 * ekes likes to run dns on named here, but list others as the dns
servers (configing them to be secondaries)
18:34 <@bunny> is on can not use there email redirect mx without using
web redirct
18:34 <@bunny> where as gandi.net one can keep using there email
forwarding even if point A records at server
18:34 <@bunny> but joker allows wildcards in dns
18:34 <@bunny> which I think gandi.net does not
18:35 <@ekes> I've been using godaddy.com - they have been adding stuff
recently - but never used to do dns
18:35 <@bunny> once joker.com was more expenisve than gandi.net
18:36 <@bunny> but with doller plumiting
18:36 <@bunny> now half price
18:36 <@bunny> Also I think joker.com it is quicker to change stuff than
gandi.net once one get's used to change
18:37 <@bunny> in interface
18:37 <@bunny> but basically joker.com and gandi.net are very similar
