mail.app is a real pain; the problem may well be there.

Have you installed parallels or VMWare Fusion (virtualization programs) 
on your mac? The networks these apps set up can interfere with mail.app

Have you checked the right smtp account is being used?

Have you tried Thunderbird? http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/
Ver 2 is much improved, free software, and my mac email client of 
choice. If you can access your acount with that, then the problem is 
with apple's own mail.app.
