Something's wrong here - who told you you had to pay to get it? The
author accepts donations, but the app still works fine without paying
money.

Have you installed F-droid? That will help you to install DAVdroid,
keep it up-to-date, and introduce you to lots of other free software.

In iceowl, right-click on the name of your calendar, click
'properties', and check that 'enable offline support' is ticked. It
works for me.

In android, you install DAVdroid first. Then add an account to setup
the connection with owncloud. Then in the calendar app, make sure
you've got this account selected to be displayed, and to be synched.
There is also a global 'enable sync' setting in some versions of
android, which has to be enabled too. This is also working for me :-)
