Corporate Watch is recruiting a full-time researcher to work on a new
migration-related project
Corporate Watch's migration researcher is leaving the co-op, so we are
looking for a new co-op member to work on a new migration-related
research project.
About the project
------------------------
There has been a clear rise in right-wing, anti-immigration politics
in the UK and across Europe more generally, coupled with increased
militarisation, externalisation and privatisation of immigration
controls. Migrants and refugees are not only being subjected to more
repression and discrimination but are also being used as a testing
ground for new techniques of social control.
Corporate Watch has worked extensively on migration-related issues
over the past few years, particularly in the areas of immigration
detention and deportation in the UK (see
www.corporatewatch.org/?lid=3751). We aim to continue and expand this
strand of our work by recruiting a new co-op member and devising a new
research project looking at some of the above-mentioned issues. As
with all our projects, we aim to make useful contributions to the
grassroots movements and campaigns around migration in the UK and
beyond.
We are therefore seeking a new co-op member to expose and profile the
corporations at the root of these problems and to demonstrate, through
a variety of accessible outputs, the consequences of the private
sector's involvement in various aspects of this 'migration management'
business, which is becoming increasingly more Europeanised, even
globalised. This involves an understanding of the recent developments
around migration in the UK, Europe and at an international level, the
impact of these developments on migrants and refugees, and on social
and economic dynamics more generally.
About the role
-------------------
The new position will involve conducting in-depth research for our new
migration research project, the precise focus of which will be
discussed and decided by the new researcher and the rest of the co-op.
This will involve producing related news and other outputs as the
research progresses, as well as helping with Corporate Watch's other
work, such as contributing to our Magazine and electronic News
Updates, collective research projects and so on.
Crucially, the position entails becoming a full member of the
Corporate Watch co-operative. This involves helping with the
day-to-day running of the co-op, including administrative tasks,
fundraising and outreach (doing stalls, giving workshops, etc.).
Corporate Watch uses consensus-based decision-making and requires all
co-op members to be happy with this mode of operation.
The role is full-time, that is, 30 hours a week. Corporate Watch has a
pay parity policy and all co-op members are currently paid at the same
rate of £9 per hour. Pay is subject to the availability of funds and
is agreed on by the whole co-op at monthly co-op meetings (although
our financial situation is currently stable, there have been times in
the past when co-op members had to go on half or no wages for a
while).
What we are looking for
---------------------------------
The candidate must meet the following criteria:
- good research and writing skills;
- good understanding of migration-related issues in the UK and beyond
and ideas for migration-related research projects; and
- willingness and ability to work cooperatively and use consensus
decision-making, including sharing general office and administrative
tasks.
The following would also be desirable:
- experience of grassroots campaigning and taking action in the field
of migration;
- links with migration-related activist networks in the UK, Europe and
beyond;
- other skills that will benefit the co-op (particularly IT, design
and fundraising);
- some experience of public speaking; and
- willingness and ability to work from our office in London.
How to apply
------------------
If you are interested, please send us (email
contact at corporatewatch.org):
- your CV;
- a short (approx. 500 word) sample of your writing; and
- a short paragraph describing why you would like to work at Corporate
Watch.
If you do not already have an example of your writing/work, please
write a short (approx. 500 words) piece on an aspect of corporate
power or a migration-related issue. Please note that extracts of
university or academic writing will not be accepted.
The second stage of the application process will be an interview. If
you are short-listed, you will be contacted and invited to be
interviewed one or two weeks after the application deadline. We will
only call short-listed applicants for interview. Please come prepared
to discuss your ideas for the migration research project.
Unfortunately our office is on the second floor and is only accessible
by stairs. If you are interested in applying and have a disability
that means our office is inaccessible to you, please let us know and
we will arrange an interview elsewhere and discuss the possibilities
of working from home or from another location suitable to you.
Deadline for applications is Friday 10th May 2013
