Sheriff's Officers backed up by tree climbing experts and police have
moved in to evict protestors from the route of the new Dalkeith Bypass
in Midlothian. Some of the protestors have climbed trees to prevent
them from being cut down and at least one is in an underground tunnel.

The protestors have been camped on the bypass route since last year.
This morning on behalf
of Transport Scotland, sheriff officers moved in to evict them. The
operation was carried out by 70 employees of an organisation.

Sheriff Officer Roddy MacPherson said: "Safety is the absolute watch
word here, and nothing is done so long as it meets health and safety
standards."

At Langside farm, between three and four protesters had climbed trees,
others were underground.

Road protester Fudge said: "Somebody's down a tunnel, locked in
underneath it, and it'll take a while to take them out. The person may
be chained to the underside of that lid, the guys will have to be
careful  in how they remove him."

Roddy MacPherson added: "There's a clear case for this bypass. We're
going to take down about 500 trees in total. In their place we'll be
building 20,000 trees."

Protestors are camped at three other sites on the route, the eviction
could take five weeks, at a cost of £100,000 a day.

So please tell me, how exactly do you build trees. Planting baby trees
does not replace a mature forest. In fact, if you plant 20,000 trees
you would expect about 25% to come to maturity in what 50 years.
