Call for a Global Movement of
Assemblies<http://www.peoplesassemblies.org/2011/02/call-for-a-global-movement-of-assemblies/>
In response to political and economic crises, austerity cuts and the
pressures of globalisation, we are now witnessing the rise of social
movements from across the political spectrum in Europe, North Africa and
beyond. But how can this popular discontent be transformed into an
emancipatory political movement?

To transform capitalist globalisation into a liberating process, our network
believes a very different form of mobilisation is now urgently required.
What is needed is a new kind of democratic politics that supports people and
planet in a universal sense, able to mobilise everywhere locally for new
social and political relations, but also transnationally for a new world all
under one inclusive, recognisable banner.

In the UK, at the National Education Assembly (held in London at the end of
January) an important resolution was passed in support of an organisational
strategy to this end, namely the setting up of democratic People’s
Assemblies in cities across the UK, Europe and further afield. At the same
gathering it was also agreed that *Saturday 26th March* – a big day of
mobilisation against austerity in the UK – should also be called as a
*Europe-wide
common day of action. *Other international
platforms<http://www.emancipating-education-for-all.org/>have also
called for the week of 21st – 26th March to be a “global week of
action” around the slogan “a free and emancipatory education for all’

The PA Network therefore encourages comrades in the UK and worldwide to find
ways to call together students, workers and local anti-cuts / other
community members by way of democratic People’s Assemblies in their
institution and cities. And, to find ways of acting on March 26th – through
direct action / occupations of government or other corporate buildings,
aswell as in non-contested spaces – to encourage the formation of People’s
Assemblies in the future. People’s Assemblies as a symbolic, but also
actualized and physical form of ‘dual power’ with which to start building
the new global society. There are already plans for People’s Assembly
occupations
in London on March 26th <http://meltdown.uk.net/election/Dual_Power.html> so
perhaps – following the above call from London – others in Europe and
elsewhere will feel inspired do the same!

Generally as a network we see People’s Assemblies as an inclusive
organisational strategy with which to take power, through direct democracy
from below, anywhere and everywhere in the world. But they are also the
means by which other services can be democratically provided, and thereby a
new, horizontal society be built by everyone together. So, a strategic
mobilisation of this kind will allow us to effect a new form of democratic
globalisation, with practical solidarity to the whole human family across
all communities.

There is an English saying “strike while the iron is hot” which can rarely
have been more apt than at this time. With this in mind, and taking
inspiration from the People’s Assembly at last year’s Climate Justice Action
(CJA) mobilisation in Copenhagen, the Toronto General Assembly, the Peoples
Assembly Network and the many spontaneous assemblies now forming worldwide,
this is a call for the convening of People’s Assemblies in institutions and
communities in the UK, Europe and a conscious joining up with other
Assemblies across the planet.
