Hosting the map on our own server is outside my knowledge, and unlikely to
be inside my knowledge in the timeframe, so I'll have to bow out.

Hi all,
My personal preference would be for openstreetmap (or NASA's satellite
images) through OpenLayers due to the proprietary nature of Google as a
service.
Sadly, both Google and OpenLayers have the same problem - requests for map
images of any line are (fairly sensibly from a performance point of view)
all made through Javascript - i.e. directly to the map provider. This means
that we have no control over access logs. One way around this would be to
host our own map image (either Google's or someone else's) and serve it
ourselves, accessing it through OpenLayers. A custom map layer like this is
definitely possible, and would probably address our security issues,
although I'm afraid that having suggested this I don't myself have time to
do this early enough so as to be useful for the Swoop.
It's not that much work (or technically complex) though, and _could_ be less
work than an illustrated map.
Hope this makes some sort of sense.
Coal and riots,
Carl

<Ah, oops, that was a mis-type, didn't mean to send as-is.>
Is there another service we can use, given the time frame?
Is there a way of using Google maps without disclosing IP addesses, etc?
Perhaps a way of Onion-Routing the map?
