I can't remember who I discussed this with, but someone wanted to know
more about this.

There are two excellent projects you should check out on XDA. Firstly
the freecyngn project which cleans out the proprietary shizzle from
cyanogenmod [1]. Then there are a family of projects in the "NOGAPPS"
project, which replace chocolate-factory parts with more
freedom-oriented functions [2].

Meanwhile, back at the mothership, FSFE have the most excellent "Free
Your Android" campaign [3].
