Report back - Mumia event
Nathan gave a brief introduction on consensus and facilitation.
1. Buy Nothing Day
Malory brought up the fact that Black Friday (the day after
Thanksgiving on which people go into a consumer frenzy) is coming up -
therefore, so is Buy Nothing Day. Several ideas were talked about for
a related event. The final event that was voted and decided on is a
movie screening of the film Affluenza on Monday November 22nd at 7pm.
This movie screening will also include a potluck. Malory is
bottomlining. At the event, after the movie, there will be a
discussion about the possibility of a Buy Nothing Day action on that
following Friday.
2. Organizing Zines
Salem proposed a zine organizing event. It was voted on and
decided that there will be a Zine Organizing Brunch potluck on
Saturday the 13th at 10 am. Salem is bottomlining.
3. Defenders Ad
It was discussed and passed with full consensus that the Flying
Brick will have an ad in the next issue of the Defenders periodical.
It was also decided that the money ($25) will be paid for out of the
Flying Brick fund. Nathan is in charge of placing the ad order.
4. IWW Event (November 21st)
It was discussed and agreed on to host an informational sharing
event by the IWW at the Flying Brick, for the CIW's picketing of
Trader Joe's. The solidarity info-sharing event at the Brick will be
on November 21st at 7pm.
5. Slingshot Organizers
It was decided that for the 2011 Slingshot Organizers, we will
order 20 large ones and 20 small ones. These will sell for $10 and $5
respectively. Nathan will bottomline ordering and selling them,
although all volunteers are encouraged to spread the word.
6. Reimbursement to Nathan for books purchased
Nathan recently purchased the following books for the library at
the Wooden Shoe Infoshop in Philadelphia:
Is Bill Cosby Right? Or has the black middle class lost its
mind?
Hear Us Out!
Fire to the Prisons Issue #9
It was discussed and decided that half of the purchase price
will be reimbursed to him from the Flying Brick fund (he spent $14
so will be paid back $7).
7. Procedure committee
We discussed the possibility of starting a committee whose
purpose would be to create a set structure for meetings and decision
procedures, as well as the proper transfer of duties (in the event
someone must drop their duties).
Nathan put forth a formal proposal for this structure committee,
with at least 2 people bottomlining, but where anybody would be
welcome to be a part of it. Nathan, Ramey, and Malory volunteered to
bottomline this committee. There was no objection to the original
proposal, nor any objections to those people who volunteered to
bottomline. The decision to create this committee passed with full
consensus.
8. Book event
Nathan relayed a message from Kontra, who had been contacted
about a possible event. The event is for a book called Defying the
Tomb, which is written by Virginia prison organizers. The possibility
of the event was okay-ed, with further information (date, time, etc)
to be decided on in the future.
9. "Regular" stuff
Brianna and Jesse will bottomline setting up the next General
Meeting.
Malory and Brianna will bottomline coordinating the Volunteer
Schedule for next month
10. Facilitation/Consensus workshop
The idea of a facilitation/consensus/volunteer training
workshop was discussed, but put on the back burner for further
discussion in the future. It was decided that official procedures
should be set up first (by the procedure committee mentioned above),
and that the event should be organized over the winter "slow time" to
be put on in the spring.
11. Report back - Mumia event
Salem reported back that while the event went well, it seemed
rushed and ended abruptly, with no time for discussion or for people
to browse the library. However, the good things were that people
seemed to enjoy the movie, and there were several newcomers to the
Brick in attendance. It was discussed that it would be nice to work on
making events more interactive, even if it's a movie screening.
12. Volunteer Recommendations (book shelf)
Nathan proposed more regular upkeep of "Volunteer
Recommendations" shelf. It was decided that the books on this shelf
should be changed out at the end of each meeting, & the books should
be more or less reflective of upcoming events.
Other upcoming events:
Potluck and Film Screening at Malory and Nic's house, either the 20th
or the 21st. Malory will let people know when the date is finalized.
Flying Brick benefit show on December 4th at Balliceaux!
