Schedule for the
Wayside Commons

Are you ready for the Commons? We are! Come to Wayside on July 7th and 8th
for our celebration with community organizers and activists from all over
the region as we indulge in an opportunity to network, socialize, share our
talents, and most importantly HAVE FUN! Check out the schedule below.

   - *10 - 4 Registration, Caucus Space, Free Time and Lunch* - Come early,
get registered, set up your tent, have lunch, tour Wayside, swim in the
creek, meet people, sit in the shade of the Walnut trees, attend one or
more of the caucus meetings . . .
   - *Queer Caucus 11-12* - Join Southerners On New Ground (SONG) at the
Wayside Commons for a Queer Caucus where we will be gathering to discuss
all issues facing the LGBTQ community in our region. We'll be spending some
time with SONG NC leadership talking about the incredible work around
Amendment One and thinking together about ways we can move toward the same
kind of movement-building work all over the region. This space is open only
   to queer-identified folks.
   - *Lunch 12-1*
   - *Prison Industrial Complex Caucus 1-2:* Facilitated by Stuart Anderson
and Netfa Freeman - Join people from all over the region who are affected
by and/or working on issues related to mass incarceration. Topics of
discussion could include prisoner solidarity and support, advocacy, the war
on drugs and building a stronger regional movement. Immigrant detention
issues will be included and the session will be interpreted. Open to all.
   - *Immigration Caucus 2:30-3:30: *Facilitated by Carolina Velez - People
directly affected by immigration issues from all over the region will
gather to discuss the situations facing their communities, the impacts of
the current political climate and how to support each other and respond
with a united front. This space is open to people directly affected by
immigration issues. The discussion will be in Spanish and will not be
   interpreted.
   - *Discussion - How Historical Context Affects Work for Social Change
   2:30 - 3:30* - Larry Yates, longtime Virginia activist/organizer, is
self-publishing 2 books about Virginia history and its relationship to
social change -- one fiction, one nonfiction. Come join him to talk about
Virginia history and how it impacts our work.
   - *Wayside Commons Celebration 4-6* Hosted by Salem Acuña, Miracle
Allums and Tobias Estes - A celebration of the work that we have all done
together over the past year. Hear spoken word and musical performances,
learn about what’s been happening at Wayside and how you can get more
involved and hear from the winners of this year’s People’s History

Getting Involved: Join One of Wayside's Committees!
          *Join Operations*
------------------------------
We work to manage the house and grounds. If you’re handy with a hammer (or
would like to learn) you can help us with new and ongoing construction
projects. We’ll also be planting a sustainable garden, building a
grey-water system, and creating walking trails through the woods. If you’re
not close, you can help recruit volunteers or follow up with house rental
requests. Write to the operations
committee<jeff at waysidecenter.org?subject=operations%20committee>
.
   Join Communications
------------------------------
We keep in touch with the community. We need your help to write the
newsletter, update the website and make materials to keep people in the
know about what we’re up to. If you like writing, illustrating, social
media or graphic/web design, then you’d be a great asset to the
Communications Committee. Write to the communications
committee.<aaron.samsel at gmail.com?subject=Communication%20Committee>

For information and inspiration watch this great

Wayside's celebratory inauguration from last July, filmed and edited
by
Wayside supporter, J Law.
      Join Development
------------------------------
We’re in charge of making sure that Wayside and our programs are here for
years to come. Fundraising isn’t just about asking people for money, we
also need volunteers to organize house parties and events like our field
day, the Wayside Cup. We make contact with potential supporters and thank
current donors for their support. Write to the development
committee.<virginia at waysidecenter.org?subject=development%20committee>
   Join Programming
------------------------------
We are in charge of reaching out to members, partners and ally
organizations to find out where there are issues. We then create programs
to support the community, including workshops at Wayside, trainings on
interpretation, a trainer’s collective and a speaker’s bureau. If you’d
like to gain more hands-on organizing or networking experience, join the
Program Committee to help keep Wayside connected to your community. Write
to the programming committee. <josh at waysidecenter.org?subject=Programming>
