Hello everybody,

Here's some info. about the film showing tomorrow, Wednesday, August
5th, in our Modern American Documentaries class at 6PM, on 2670 E. 13th Ave:

“Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Hunter S. Thompson”

Several attempts have been made to document and present the story of
this feverishly intense man of sex, drugs and sentences, but it wasn't
until Alex Gibney ("Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room") came along
and got all the footage, music and wide-eyed stories together in one
film that finally we had a proper look at the greatest American writer
of a generation.

Leaping around through footage of his campaign for Sheriff, narrations
by Johnny Depp, and interviews with close friends like Jimmy Carter, Pat
Buchanan and former Hells Angels, “Gonzo . . .” is a rhythmic
presentation of one mans quest to observe and comment on a period of
cyclonic chaos in American history.

Mostly covering the golden years of 1965—1975, “Gonzo” gives us an
intimate and entertaining glance at the life that lead to such
unforgettable books as “Hells Angels,” “Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas,”
and “Fear and Loathing On The Campaign Trail.” Anyone familiar with
these texts has surely been infected with an itchy curiosity about the
man that pried open our eyes to such wild visions. And this documentary
is surely the unequivocal champion biography of H.S. Thompson,
chronicling his mad fast ride through presidential politics, outlaw
bikers, and a Dyonisian lifestyle of drugs and alcohol that mirrors the
60's age of hedonism to varying degrees of pleasure and pain.

In this class we will watch the film, and follow it with a group
discussion of the hippy movement, the roles and responsibilities of
journalists in society, and the effect of mood altering chemicals on the
creative mind.
