The G8 summit is a meeting of the leaders of the eight most
powerful countries in the world, and it's coming to Britain in
2005 to meet at the exclusive golf resort of Gleneagles, Scotland.

The G8 leaders, including Tony Blair and George Bush, will be
there to discuss how to continue the "War on Terror" with its
wasted billions spent on armaments, attacks on our civil
liberties and prospect of endless war. They will also be
planning the further spread of "free trade" policies around the
world – privatisation and welfare cuts, union-busting and
sweatshops, third world debt and environmental destruction,
plus the commercialisation of the NHS, our schools,
universities, housing - and everything else!

The G8 agenda isn't how to make the world a better place for the
billions who live in it but a more profitable place for the
billionaires, banks and corporations that run it.

But these powerful politicians won't be meeting alone. Tens of
thousands of people from across Europe and beyond - activists,
workers, farmers, and students - will protest at the Gleneagles

Anti-poverty groups such as Oxfam will hold a huge
demonstration on Saturday July 2nd to demand the G8
governments cancel third world debt, with special trains leaving
from 10 cities across Britain, including Leeds. This will start off
a week of protests that will culminate in attempts to disrupt the
summit itself. A counter-summit on Sunday July 3rd will bring
together thousands to discuss the G8, corporate globalisation
and alternatives to it.

The Leeds Social Forum unites students, trade unionists,
community organisations, activists from many groups and
people from no group who want to make a difference. We are
building for the Gleneagles G8 protests, and aim to take the
movement back home afterwards to tackle poverty, racism and
exploitation here in Leeds as part of a global Social Forum
movement. Coaches and a train will leave from Leeds to go to
the G8, and meetings in the run up to it will discuss what's
happening and organise getting there, so get in touch to find out

Welcome to the Leeds Social Forum

A Social Forum is an open meeting place for democratic debate of ideas,
the free exchange of experiences and to organise effective action.

Social forums bring together many different campaign groups,
organisations and people who just want to make a difference.

Social forums are springing up across Britain, as part of a growing
international movement against war, oppression, and a "free-market",
profit-driven world.

We are a group of people who want to build a Social forum in Leeds. We
meet regularly to discuss ideas and organise campaigns. So if you are
for decent and affordable housing and social care, and against poverty,
privatisation, racism and war...then the Leeds Social Forum is the place
for you!
