You can get free for one year cert from gandi.net _if_ you use them as a registrar for your domain ( about £10/year for a .org )
.. Also .. if you can work through the setup you can get a free certificate from Startssl.com
both these certificates will be trusted in the major browsers ( though you may need to configure your web server to pass an intermediate certificate also )
