I tend use Gandi and have not yet had any problems. They are based in France so perhaps a little more resilient to US pressure

Does anyone have any recommendations for DNS registrars who they trust
and who are relatively cheap?

I have just been reading about godaddy suspending Fyodor's domain with
52 seconds notice http://nodaddy.com/mystory.html and thinking about
wikileaks and so I am keen to use someone who will
