Bettermeans looks very slick, and the intro video is inspiring. Registration
is currently broken however, so there's no way to try it out. I'll think about
installing it locally to give it a trial run. All that consensus building
looks like it'd take time though. And I hope you can disable the vote-based
staff salary system.

The two frontrunners for me are ClockingIT (still) and TaskFreak
(http://taskfreak.com). TF is very simple, and appears to be unmaintained, but
it is extremely easy to use and very visual, which is great for working with
volunteers. No calendar or Gantt functionality though, and no support for sub
or dependent tasks however.

Out of interest I'll use the tool for managing the Document Freedom Day 2014
campaign.
