  Hackney Independent Film Showing

On Sunday November 20, starting at 2.00pm, we will be holding our 2005
Film
Day and what an extravagance we have lined up! We've unearthed some
real
working class gems from the past and present. Learn about the squatting
movement in the years just after the Second World War, and see how
effective
the mass London tenants rebellion was in the late 1960s. Britain's most
famous TV film-maker, Nick Broomfield, has personally donated two of
his
earliest features: Behind the Rent Strike and Who Cares? Both of these
short
films date from mid-70s and concern how tenants bitterly responded to
new
housing development plans (sound familiar?!).
Naomi Rodriguez, director of All That Glitters, will show her film and
deliver an introduction. Weaving between interviews concerning the
Docklands
developments of the 1980s, and those concerned with Olympic effects on
East
London, the film implies that past trends in the Docklands and erosion
of
public spaces, skyrocketing property prices; total disregard for the
working
class; increased unemployment; the proliferation of luxury housing,
shops,
and new businesses coupled with the destruction of their non-luxury
counterparts are likely to be repeated in Stratford and the Lea Valley.
Spectacle Productions are an independent television production company
specialising in documentary and community-led investigative journalism.
Spectacle's Mark Saunders will be on hand to show clips from and talk
about
his latest project with local residents in southeast London which
focuses on
the effects of gentrification as it sweeps south. David Panos and Ben
Seymour made their short film the London Particular a few years ago.
Focusing on Britain's gentrification frontline, Shoreditch, it's a film
essay about regeneration and insidious social change on the borders of
the
City. So come to our film day to see all this and more.

  Hi all!

I've booked an area inside THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR public house on the corner of
Carey Street and Chancery Lane WC2 for THIS FRIDAY 18 NOVEMBER 2005.

Do come along if you can. Try to get there just before 6.30pm but if you
can't make it until 8pm don't worry I'll still be there.

Go inside the pub and go UPSTAIRs, on the balcony on your right at the top
of the stairs

RSVP - (especially let me know if you know you will definitely not be
coming)
