THE HARINGEY INDEPENDENT CINEMA XMAS SPECIAL - Jean Vigo's 'ZERO DE CONDUITE' & Lindsay Anderson's 'if...'On Thursday 13th December we welcome one and all to the West Green Learning Centre for the Haringey Independent Cinema Xmas Special. Doors open 6.30pm, Zero De Conduite starts at 6.45pm and if.... starts at 8.00pm with a break between films for festive refreshments. Take the opportunity to socialise with fellow free-thinkers and film-lovers over a drink or two at KK McCool's afterwards. No Gods, No Masters and a Happy New Year from all of us at HIC.Zero de Conduit. 1933, France, 44mins.A repressive hot house of a boarding school with rigid and ridiculous behavioural codes allowed Jean Vigo to construct a surreal call for anarchy that was banned in France until 1945. Failure to comply with the rules results in the pupils getting a ‘zero for conduct’ and the stage is set to question authority and revolt.Packed with strange and subversive ideas and anti-establishment symbolism the film was a key influence on Lindsay Anderson's... if....1968, UK, 111mins.A provocative, savage and wickedly funny masterpiece, 'if....', uses the English public school setting not to affirm tradition, but to launch an attack on authoratarianism and the way the Establishment rules by dividing and co-opting. The students at College House are kept in line by conformity, fear and prefects - the repressive conditions are carefully portrayed through a blend of English surrealism and near-documentary style realism to astonishing effect - as is the painful nature of rebellion when confronting the brutality of the institution. Fittingly, the film appears to echo the political uprisings taking place in 1968 in Paris, Prague and the USA.West Green Learning CentrePark View AcademyWest Green RoadLondon N15 3RBBuses: 41, 341, 67, 230.£3 waged/£2 low & unwaged.----------------------------------------------also at the same venue...THE KIDS COLLECTIVE COMMUNITY FILM GROUP PROUDLY PRESENTS...THE THIEF OF BAGDAD.No, not the venal and despicable tale of a corrupt American President with blood and oil stained hands, but the triple oscar-winning 1940 fantasy adventure that is packed with All Seeing Eyes, genies, flying carpets, princes, princesses, roguish vagabonds and evil rulers. In glorious Technicolor to and all glorious Technicolor, this is a rare opportunity to see such an adventure on the big screen, to dress up as an Arabian knight/princess and to glimpse life before Computer Generated Imagery and perfect teeth. Magical entertainment and succulent refreshments will be provided (possibly a little Xmas cheer for our older patrons) and three wishes may be granted to the grown-up in the best costume*.Saturday 15th December 10.30amWest green learning CentrePark View AcademyWest green RoadLondon N15 3RBBuses 41, 341, 67, 230.Entrance £1.00.
