Birds,
Booze and Bulldozers (a novel)
by
Peter Styles
Saturday
2nd February, 5pm

Can
you save the planet with a bicycle lock? Maybe. Birds,
Booze and Bulldozers is the inside story of Britain's environmental
direct
action movement - the most effective political counter-culture of the
1990s.

Peter
Styles was a full-time environmental activist for much
of the 1990s. Deeply involved in a variety of campaigns, he was one of
the
first to be charged under the 1994 Criminal Justice Act and was jailed
for his
part in the Newbury bypass protests. He then spent several years
covering the
movement for the underground and mainstream press. Now living in Brighton, he has kept penury at bay with
subsequent
careers as a journalist, lecturer and comedy writer.

The
Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster
Capitalism by Naomi Klein
£25
(Hardcover), Allen Lane,
576pp

Klein
has a unique talent to make socio-economics accessible
and readable, and her latest is no exception. The Shock Doctrine is an
examination
of the cause and effect of free market politics, which not
uncontroversially
she links to events ranging from Pinochet’s coup of 1973, to tortute in
Guantanamo
Bay.

The
shock doctrine itself, refers to the use of public
disorientation following massive collective shocks - wars, terrorist
attacks,
natural disasters - to push through unpopular economic measures.
Crucial
reading.

`Impassioned,
hugely informative, wonderfully controversial,
and scary as hell' John le Carré

9.
London
