Art 05 is a citywide contemporary arts event that will be held throughout November. The event is loosely based on the concept of Spectator Ta fictional member of the audience who responds to art in a negativemanner. For this, the artist Gavin Wade wrote a piece of text forartists to respond to, with in this text is the sentence: "SpectatorT…doesn't ignore Art he hates it. He feels like it attempts tointerfere with his life."
The show Urban Invasion is a response to Gavin Wade's text, which hasbeen interpreted as the 'Invasion of Space'. The theme for theexhibition will be Urban Decay, which is a direct response to theMatilda building and its location, an old Victorian factory in theheart of a newly developed city centre. The exhibition will be aselection of work that addresses the theme of Urban Decay while thedisplay of the art will work in such a way as to create a dialoguewith the audience about the Invasion of Space.
All mediums of work will be considered: photography, sculpture, installation, video, new media, sound installations, painting, drawings and textiles. The content of the work should address issuesof Urban decay and Urban regeneration while the display of the workwill address the issues of the invasion of space and how ourenvironment effects us both spiritually and physically.
Matilda is a new social and community centre that has opened up inSheffield's City Centre and is on the edge of the Cultural IndustriesQuarter. Matilda's aim is to bring grass roots creativity and anon-commercialised culture to the heat of Sheffield.http://wiki.sheffieldsocialforum.org.uk/MATILDA
