Whenever the cafe` collective cooks we always empty the bin and the
compost when we leave and whenever i enter the building i always ensure
that the compost and bin in the veagan kitchen are emptied. We also store
food in ratproof containers like metal filing cabinets or fridges.
However the responsibility for ensuring the cafe` is rat proof should not
fall just on the cafe collective, if you put stuff in the bin or leave
dirty dishes on the side or crumbs all over the floor then you need to
clean it up. We are not going to come into the cafe at the end of every
night to clean up the mess that everyone in matilda makes.
As a side note i think that it is inhumane and pointless to put out traps
for the rats if people are leaving large amounts of food open in the
non-veagan kitchen. It is hypocritical to knowingly feed animals and then
punish them for giving into the temptation that we have been leaving for
them. I wont support the laying of traps untill we have dealt with the
issue of leaving food in non-ratproof containers and people not emptying
the bins.
Lastly, if the non-veagan kitchen is attracting rats due to nobody taking
responsibility for it maybe there needs to be a "meat kitchen collective"
formed from the people that wanted a meat kitchen and then they can look
after it. I would like to refer people to the agreement that we have a
non-veagan kitchen on condition that it doesnt decend into a complete mess
and if it did turn into a complete mess then we would shut it down.
