Dear all,

we are looking to raise about £250 to fulfill a small dream of a
grassroots NGO in Bangladesh: to purchase an old laptop, give it new
life with a Linux system.

Shahid Mallick from TREE (Training Reseach Education for Empowerment:
www.treebd.org) visited Lancaster in February to network with people
taking part in the Knowledge Lab conference (www.knowledgelab.org.uk),
and generally with local community activists and academics.

Those of you who have had the opportunity to spend enough time with him
to overcome the language difficulties will know that TREE is really
doing inspiring work in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh, and that
Shahid himself is a very unusual and interesting character.

The laptop would be used to increase the mobility of TREE who are trying
to generate similar grassroots initiatives in other parts of the
country. It would also help to boost the self-esteem of the little
organisation, as well as the regard of Shahid himself. Many people
believe that he is at bottom a lost dreamer and failure. The tangible
proof of friends in Europe could make a difference to that dynamic, and
help garner more support from better-off people in Bangladesh.

If you would like to contribute in whatever small a way to the purchase
of a laptop, which a friend will take all the way to Dhaka at the end of
May, or if you would like to contribute something else, please get in
touch with me.

Thanks a lot,
nina
