CITY CENTRE COMMUNITY GROUP FIGHTS EVICTION
A city centre community group, which has turned an abandoned building
into a thriving social centre, is fighting eviction this week, and plans
to demonstrate outside the court in support of their cause.
The group, calling themselves MATILDA, have been using the old Yorkshire
Arts Space building on Matilda Street, in Sheffield's Cultural
Industries Quarter. For a year they have put on exhibitions,
performances and film showings, as well as providing much needed working
and meeting space for local artists.
If evicted, the building will stand empty for at least two years.
Currently, there is no planned development for the site. The group are
asking the owners, regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, to let
them stay - at least until they know when the site will be re-developed.
The court case will be heard on Thursday 22nd June, 10:30am, at
Sheffield County Court, The Law Courts, 50 West Bar, Sheffield, S3 8PH.
The demonstration in support of MATILDA will take place outside the
court at the same time.
