ECRE's Memorandum to the Finnish Presidency - The Hague Programme and
beyond
In its Memorandum, entitled “The Hague programme and beyond”, ECRE draws
attention to some important issues it feels need to be addressed by the
Finnish Presidency of the EU from July-December 2006 in the area of
asylum. Key concerns include balancing the fight against illegal
immigration with access to protection, responsibility sharing,
transposition of EU asylum legislation, asylum decision-making, return
procedures, integration, resettlement and human rights in EU-Russian
relations. ECRE notably calls for more respect of the asylum institution
in line with Tampere, a review of Dublin II, the suspension of
discussions on the safe country list and a number of safeguards in the
proposed draft Return Directive.

Conference: Migrant Voices and Migrant Rights: Getting heard
                   in the public debate on immigration and inclusion

The Migrants' Rights Network (MRN) is now pushing ahead with the
organisation of its first national conference, to take place on Monday
6th November in central London. For those of you who received our
previous MRN news, please note that this is a change of date from the
one notified there.

The working title of the event is Migrant Voices and Migrant Rights:
Getting heard in the public debate on immigration and inclusion. It
will be free to attend. The target audience for the conference will be:

1. migrant and refugee community organisations (MRCOs);
2. NGOs, including trades unions, working closely with MRCOs on
    immigration, workplace and social policy issues;
3. public authorities working closely with MRCOs (such as local
    government, health services, schools, etc);
4. public policy researchers working on issues concerning migrant
    communities;
5. Human rights and equality advocacy and campaign organisations.

The objective of the conference is to:

- review the current state of the public policy debate as it concerns
  MRCOs and other organisations working with them;
- provide MRCOs with the opportunity to formulate positions on issues of
  central  importance in common with other groups in the network;
- establish key priority areas for campaigning, lobbying and public
  education in 2007;
- facilitate networking between groups.

A programme for the discussion will be available shortly. If you have
suggestions for this please do let the MRN team know via the contact
details below.

11: Update on case of refugee researcher sacked from Salford University

Rhetta’s colleagues, students, and supporters believe that she was
targeted for the sack because of her research into refugee issues that
was the first to expose how UK Government Policy was making people
destitute.
The employment tribunal panel that is hearing her case has sat for 23
days so far.
The court will reconvene at Alexandra House, 14-22 The Parsonage,
Manchester M3 2JA. (Alexandra House is located directly behind Kendals
on Deansgate.) on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th August and Monday 2nd to
Friday 6th October. Your continued support and solidarity are important.
The tribunal sessions run from 10am to 1pm, then from around 2pm to 5pm
in the afternoon. Your attendance at any time would be greatly
appreciated.
