Rights for All Workers
Unity the Union of Asylum seekers has called before to be given the
Right to Work. "We are not here to claim benefits". All of us, no matter
where we were born, are stronger if they work together to resist exploitation.
For this and many more reasons, UNITY will be at the Trade Union Council's
May Day event as part of an International Block, standing alongside workers
no matter what their immigration status. We have more in common than
dividing us, No One is Illegal.
It’s against the law for asylum seekers to work

[11] Careleavers, Unaccompanied Children, Age assessments & unethical,
     Home Office suggestions
----------

Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) Reform Programme
- Social Services Leads Meeting
There was general concern over the proposal that the Home Office would
procure accommodation for children and young people as they currently do
with adults. Adult accommodation is often in the cheapest areas and it
was felt that this would not be suitable for children and young people.
The Home Office’s suggestion of encouraging medical examination by not
presenting the true purpose of the check ie. presenting it as a medical
check rather than as an age assessment, was seen as unethical.

Age disputes

The (Home Office) proposals to deal with disputes about a person’s age
are likely to be amongst the most
controversial. ILPA has been funded by the Nuffield Foundation to:

- undertake research on the experiences of children
  whose age has been disputed
- make recommendations for improvements to procedures
  for deciding on age disputes

and providing support in these cases

A summary of the research and recommendations will be the subject of an
information sheet in
due course.
