The black faces that adorn the canvas of history
What did Black Britain look like in the 1800s?
There were perhaps 20,000 black people in Britain at the time of
abolition in 1807. None were slaves. Slavery in the home country of the
Empire had been gradually proscribed after the Mansfield judgment of
1772; because, as every

Racial equality in Britain? Don t make me laugh
Thats enough self-congratulation about the slave trade
We can all easily agree, as MPs did on Tuesday when they debated William
Wilberforces great achievement, that sex trafficking is a sick form of
slavery. Even the Government has belatedly caught up with the mood on
this, and will today sign, two years late and after 34 other countries,
the Council of Europes convention against trafficking human beings,
which offers protection to trafficked sex slaves by treating them as
victims not criminals.

the Gulf of Aden
Over the past 6 days, Yemen has again received more than 1,100 Somalis
and Ethiopians who arrived on smuggling boats from Bosaso, Somalia,
across the Gulf of Aden. According to our latest information, we believe
that at least 28 people died during these recent voyages from
asphyxiation, beating or drowning and many were badly injured by the
smugglers.
