Guy Fawkes was a rebel who tried to blow up the houses of parliament. 
 
With all the Lords inside it. 
 
As a revolutionary thing to do. 
 
However he and his were betrayed by one of the upper crust "chums" they had thought was a part of their cause and ended up getting hung drawn and quartered for his efforts.
 
Trouble is today I couldn't say for certain whether the celebration is for how close the revolutionaries got to their goal or a celebration of their defeat. 
 
So as ever its up to you what you celebrate. Enjoy!!
