oh what a year it's turning out to be so far! the collapse of the whole
dinosaur infrastructure accelerates on more and more fronts, and a Great
Cloud of Gloom lifts as the final bush year runs into the iraqi sand as
prophesied.

    * total economic meltdown continues in plunges and landslides as
we've been predicting for months, years, decades really! the
total bad credit, as we revealed in UP! 269A, is $45 TRILLION! or
look at UP! 262// The "Crash of 2007" - better believe it."
nearly everyone was saying it was almost over at that time, that
it was just too many bad mortgage debts. it wasn't and it isn't.
this one really could go all the way.

what "all the way" /means /is open to complex debate, of course, but
basically what the planet needs is a total collapse of the present
System. and i am genuinely surprised and delighted, after so many years
sounding like a loony for saying it, to hear more and more of my friends
and others on the web finally grokking that this might be the planet's
best & possibly ONLY hope. for it is becoming clearer by the hour that
the powers-that-be will NEVER, can never, make the required changes in
time. they CAUSED it and they're continuing to cause it, and nothing in
their Dino-reality-model allows any significant change. THEY, indeed,
ARE the Problem! and, of course, all the poor consumer sheep they have
brainwashed into their current fatal lifestyles.

it's important to see that a mere recession, which is already a fairly
unanimously agreed forecast for the years ahead, is NOT enough and
could, in fact, only make things WORSE. [An article called Profits of
Doom in last week's Independent on Sunday described corporations thus:
** Big Busines shuns green policies, new global survey reveals. ** 9 in
10 firms fail to make fight on global warming priority. ** Revenue
comes first and recession will harden their resistance.] so pray it
goes all the way and doesn't recover :)

    * the Great US Public, that great ...draa.a..ag... on human
evolution which has been holding everything back, when given their
once-every-4 years choice between the left and right wings of the
ruling elite, turn out to be SCREAMING FOR CHANGE - the fact that
they have little idea of what that might be is waaaay less
relevant than the fact that THEY NOW UNDERSTAND ONE THING VERY
CLEARLY WHICH THEY DIDN'T BEFORE, namely that the dinosaurs ALWAYS
cause death & destruction. and people now don't want it ever
again! this fact is NEVER going to return to the Bad Old Days.

    * the Iraq Attack is now the most hated & derided phenomenon on
planet Earth; Bush, as i predicted when almost everyone else was
scared stiff to even raise their voices, has become the Greatest
Schmuck in Human History [Sept 2005 - "obviously none of this can
begin to happen till the dinosaurs have finally been shrugged onto
the Fossil Record, with the name George Bush consigned to History
as the planet's Greatest Bogyman & Schmuck. sounds about right to
me :)"]; and the idea that its instigators will one day face the
firing squad is looking a lot LESS unlikely with every week.

[In The Philadelphia Inquirer this week, Elizabeth Holtzman writes: "Since mid-December, members of the House Judiciary Committee Robert Wexler (D-Florida), Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) have called for hearings on the impeachment of Vice President Cheney: http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/012808R.shtml

    * food costs are rising as water levels, droughts and other eco
disasters hit home. how many official commentators have you heard
making this absolutely undeniable and inevitable connection?!

    * oil prices are hitting record levels, denied as being possible
      just a year ago.

    * world poverty deepens and the recent Davros summit actually agreed
      this was true.

    * diseases are spreading across the globe - deng fever shows up in
new york. mosquitoes all over the uk etc etc.

    * on the science front a new paradigm has appeared which overthrows
most of what we thought Science had established. it looks likely
to re-throne spirit, consciousness and Objective reality (instead
of the relativity that has ruled since the 1950s and has certainly
caused a large part of humanity's current low morality.

    * ecuador's president morales is sending coca leaves to chavez (see

[i put those last 2 in to cheer you up after a baaaad list. karma from
the future will be battling daily with karma from the Past for quite a
while now :)]

- and now i've heard everything :)
US teenagers are facing a legal ban on sporting saggy trousers - a style
originally kicked off in london by young blacks (as is often the case!).

The fashion fad has been banned or is being considered for banning in at
least 8 different states. The moves are fueled by fears that sloppy
dress is related to delinquency.

UP!

I SAID A YEAR AGO THAT, IF HISTORY REQUIRES A MOMENT WHEN THE PEOPLE
STAND UP
TO REFUSE & REJECT THE RULING ELITE TO A STANDSTILL, THEN THIS WILL
PROBABLY BE IT.
NOW IT'S COMING TRUE, WITH GORDON BROWN FINALLY ANNOUNCING THE NUCLEAR
OPTION.

Nuclear - One of the Biggest Policy
Misjudgments of this Generation
- Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London
The Government's decision to embark on a new nuclear power programme,
supported by the Conservative Party, is not only bad energy and climate
policy, it is also damaging economically. We will literally all pay for
it through higher electricity bills and taxes. It will severely hit
many firms involved in the energy industry outside the nuclear sector
who have low carbon, economically effective products but will not
receive public subsidy. Far from using market mechanisms to tackle
environmental issues, such a nuclear policy overrides the market to the
detriment of everyone. It is, in short, one of the biggest policy
misjudgments of this generation.

There is, of course, a preliminary safety issue on nuclear power: there
is no way to deal with the consequences of a catastrophic nuclear
accident. For many, that by itself rules out nuclear power. But for
the sake of argument let us assume that there is some way to make
nuclear power safe. Even then, the policy in the Energy Review remains
irremediably wrong on both economic and climate change grounds.

It is simply not true for the review to state that the private sector
will bear the full cost of nuclear power including decommissioning. No
country has developed nuclear power without large public subsidy. The
decommissioning costs of existing nuclear power stations are now
estimated by the Treasury at £90 billion. It is evident that the
private sector cannot meet such a requirement. The only question is by
what route the required substantial public subsidy will be provided.
Whatever the form, it will not be only the taxpayer who will pick up the
bill but also those companies directly and indirectly involved in energy
who do not receive such subsidy.

The key argument in favour of using market mechanisms wherever possible,
including in energy, is that thousands of factors go into making any
single decision. It is preferable, wherever there is no overriding
argument against, to allow the market to calculate all the pluses and
minuses rather than concentrate only on a few factors that will
inevitably be inaccurately estimated to some degree. In energy, the
requirement for large public subsidy shows that these private market
signals are against nuclear power.

The reasons are simple. First, the single greatest financial saving on
energy is to waste less. Consultation with large energy producers
indicates that existing economic output could be maintained with as
little as half the current energy output. In London, for example, 44%
of carbon emissions are from homes. Researchers at Oxford University's
Environmental Change Institute have demonstrated that simply properly
insulating houses, and encouraging more responsible use of electricity,
cuts domestic carbon emissions by 60%. The most cost efficient methods
in the energy sector are roof lagging, proper glazing, wall insulation
and energy efficient construction materials.

Regarding power generation itself, the key fact is that two-thirds of
existing centralised energy production is wasted - either disappearing
in steam through cooling towers or in the grid as electricity is
transmitted over long distances. All nuclear power stations, in
addition to their other costs, will suffer from this inefficiency - it
is evidently impossible to site them in urbanised areas. Decen-tralised
local power production, which is now technologically possible, therefore
starts with a tremendous economic advantage over nuclear power. In such
schemes, often referred to as Combined Heat Power and Cooling, energy
losses are cut to only 10-15% - providing the cost margin for them to be
cheaper than nuclear.

The manipulations involved in the Energy Review are shown in that the
alternative use of the finance for energy saving or decentralised energy
production were not modeled - economically vitiating the entire study.

It is because nuclear power is uneconomic that market-led trends have
been against it. Nuclear power now generates less energy worldwide than
micro-renewables - combined heat and power, small wind turbines and
solar panels. In 2004, the latest year for which data is available,
micro-renewables and combined heat and power added nearly three times as
much new output and six times as much capacity as new nuclear power.

London is the UK's most important energy market. It has already
established a Climate Change Agency. I shall use all my existing and
new powers to pursue an alternative to the Government's Energy Review.

chocolates and London's only 100% organic cocktail bar.

"The Lounge" (as it will surely come to be called with a name like the
present one) also offers free internet access, a responsible parenting
kids space during the day, and a fabulously secret open-air area
downstairs on the banks of the canal. Try and sit where the big sign
across from you reads "CAMDEN ANAL MARKET" :)

It's changing and catching on really fast, and i hope it doesn't get too
bizzy too soon, but right now each Friday and Saturday night the venue
turns into a meltdown of multimedia magic, saturated by some of the
finest in ambient electronica, performances, poetry and loads more. No
politics yet but here's hoping.

*Chavez: "I Chew Coca Daily" *
**
*Venezuela's controversial President Hugo Chavez has revealed that he
regularly consumes coca -- the source of cocaine.

Chavez's comments on coca came amid a 4-hour speech to the National
Assembly during which he made international headlines by calling on
other countries to stop branding two leftist Colombian guerrilla groups
as terrorists and instead recognize them as "armies."

"I chew coca every day in the morning . . . and look how I am," he
said, showing his biceps to the audience.

Chavez, who does not drink alcohol, says that Fidel Castro "sends me
Coppelia ice cream and a lot of other things that regularly reach me
from Havana," Bolivian President Evo Morales "sends me coca paste . .
. and I recommend it to you."
> > we have, of course, previously covered President Morales' campaign to
legalise and commercialise the production of coca, even for
schoolchildren. He is the longtime head of a Bolivian coca-growers'
union and is known to chew coca in public, even during cabinet meetings,
since he took office.

This is not the first time Chavez has praised the properties of coca
leaves. During a visit to a communal kitchen in western Caracas in
early 2006, with Uruguayan President Tabare Vasquez, Chavez suggested
using the kitchen's ovens to bake bread made from a special coca-based
flour.

"We could try that here, as part of that effort to de-Satanise a product
that our indigenous people have been producing for centuries," he said.

And in early 2007, Venezuela signed an agreement to buy 4,000 tons of
coca leaf from Bolivia in what it said was an effort to diminish the
supply available for refining paste and cocaine and launch the
manufacture of food and medicinal products on an industrial scale.

RECOGNISING A S*T*R*OKE*
The 3 Steps
You could turn a corner tomorrow and find somebody on the ground. WHAT
TO DO? Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. And
this lack of awareness can spell disaster. The stroke victim may suffer
severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognise the symptoms of
a stroke.

Now doctors have come up with this easy test. It's 3 components are
made up of the first 3 letters of STR OKE.
S * Ask them to SMILE.
T * Ask them to TALK, and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (coherently e.g. It
is sunny out today).
R * Ask them to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

OK E * if they can do all that.

The 935 Lies
Which the Bush Team Told before Iraq Attack
- *Center for Public Integrity Report*
The *Center for Public Integrity <http://www.publicintegrity.org/>*, in
a new independent report, chronicles at least 935 falsities that
President Bush and his team made in the run-up to the Iraq War in order
to win over public opinion in the U.S. and abroad:

"Iraq -- The War Card: Orchestrated Deception on the Path to War."

*This comprehensive examination of top Bush administration officials'
statements over a 2-year period shows how top officials galvanised
public opinion in the run-up to the invasion. The project's chronology
provides a framework for examining how the administration's false
statements led the country into the war in Iraq. The results of this
analysis question the repeated assertions of Bush administration
officials that they were merely the unwitting victims of bad intelligence.*
**
*Center founder Charles Lewis and researchers helping him were
instrumental in identifying 935 false statements by 8 top administration
officials that mentioned Iraq's possession of weapons of mass
destruction, or links to Al Qaeda, on at least 532 separate occasions.
The false statements included in the analysis were made by Bush, Cheney,
Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and
White House press secretaries Ari Fleisher and Scott McClellan.*
*>> who should soon be facing treason trials, mark my words.*
* *
*"Bush and the top officials of his administration have so far largely
avoided the harsh, sustained glare of formal scrutiny about their
personal responsibility for the litany of repeated, false statements in
the run-up to the war in Iraq," said Lewis, now president of the Fund
for Independence in Journalism and a professor at the American
University School of Communications in Washington. "There has been no
congressional investigation, for example, into what exactly was going on
inside the Bush White House in that period, and now millions of White
House emails from 2001 to October 2003 apparently may have been destroyed."*
* *
*The analysis graphically shows how President Bush and seven of his
administration's top officials methodically propagated erroneous
information over the 2 years beginning on September 11, 2001. These
false statements dramatically increased in August 2002, just prior to
congressional consideration of a war resolution and during the critical
weeks in early 2003 when the president delivered his State of the Union
address and Powell delivered his memorable presentation to the U.N.
Security Council. These statements have been included in a fully
searchable 380,000-word database, assembled from primary and secondary
public sources, major news organizations and more than 25 government
reports, books, articles, speeches, and interviews.*
***
President Bush had the most false statements, at 260, about weapons of
mass destruction and links to Al Qaeda in Iraq, followed by Secretary of
State Powell with 254. The analysis reveals that officials with the
most opportunities to make speeches, grant media interviews, and
otherwise frame the public debate also made the most false statements. *
