as i watched that video i suddenly remembered a very very similar concept i was pushing waaaay back in about 1990 - new^2 agers (new new agers) who were infinitely more committed to massive change than new agers ever were.

i dug it out.  it was my editorial in evolution^ magazine (1990, vol 13 of the Encyclopaedia Psychedelica) in the early days of rave culture - actually before it had become a culture at all.

and it was so prophetic, and still so absolutely relevant, that i've decided to reprint it.  it should give original readers a thrill of memory, and hopefully everyone else a shot of adrenaline and encouragement as we advance further into this critical new year.

psychedelic festival scene which never died and which has been 
struggling to change our crazy, planet-unfriendly political system that

always retained control by divide-and-rule.
well, it won't happen this time.  because now we're running out of time!

unity will come out of this diversity, just as 1 world will come out of 
the crazy nation states we have now.  what shall we call this movement 
that's now emerging and which will usher in a whole new evolutionary 
one-world planet culture?  how about new^2 age! [NEW NEW age as opposed 
to OLD NEW age).  but take it with a snort of salt - tags change but the 
feelings, ideas and philosophies are here to stay.  why new^2 age?  
because new age = improving yourself, but new^2 age = saving ourselves 
/and our planet,/ ok?


NEW^2 AGE = NEW AGE NEXT STAGE
at last we're thinking for ourselves, and prepared to experiment.
now we realise that our pop stars and style leaders don't know,
our politicians and religious authorities don't know, and we don't know.
so why do we feel so positive?  because at last we're ready to find out!
let's experiment, then, with the very best our minds can uncover, let's go
fullblooded for a fucking new^2 age and find out for ourselves if it's 
possible or not.
it's going to require courage, insight and perseverance.

for 50, and maybe 1000 years the world has been prepared for a new age, 
and now the '90s generation will actually introduce it.  whoever you 
are, wherever you are, and whether you realise it or not, you are 
already - and /accele r a t i n g l y/ so every day - living in the new 
age.  for years you have been hearing its ideas, bathing in its music, 
being inspired by its artists and popularisers; you have certainly 
bought some of its products, from brown bread to lead-free petrol.  as 
for its philosophies, therapies, religions and rituals, you may well 
have participated more deliberately, but again perhaps without realising 
they were new age.  even checking out the e numbers on a packet of food 
is a new age ritual - they wouldn't have been there if people like you 
hadn't /demanded/ it.

new agers seeking to change society often reach us on tv, in newspapers 
and magazines, at your local health clinic, in the movies, on records. 
even sports, exercise, slimming, beauty and fitness programs, 
motivational training, psychological counselling and career therapies 
are regular pipelines for the new age lifestyle and morality.  western 
culture has been thus penetrated since the turn of the century.  but, 
for hundreds or even thousands of years before that, prophets, shamans, 
heretics, witches, alchemists, rebels, bohemians, beatniks and hippies 
were all united by a conviction that "official" society had taken a 
wrong turn, and that woMan, instead of working to live, was living to 
work; and that life's tru/e/ aim had been lost, along with respect for 
nature, not only outer but inner /.........

but especially, since the previous great new age mass spiritual protest 
by the '60s hippies, western culture has been thoroughly permeated with 
concepts/attitudes that only 20 years ago seemed exotic and even evil to 
the majority.  now, with 2 million votes for the greens (many of whose 
leaders were hippies) and concern for the outer & inner environment at 
record heights, what the /Observer/ newspaper has called "the most 
powerful social force on the planet today" seems unstoppable, and seems 
to touch every area of life, from medicine to education, from nutrition 
to sport, and from entertainment to politics, science and technology 
themselves.

as communications shrink the world, and the reaction to each 
individual's actions approaches instant feedback, world culture is being 
throughly permeated with new ageism.  new age music and publishing are* 
billion dollar indu$trie$.*  international media festivals, organised or 
fronted by new agers, inspire millions to tackle planetary symptoms.  
multinational companies hire new age consultants to increase employee 
effectiveness & fulfillment.  new age "politics" emphasising green & 
peace issues, decentralisation and social/personal responsibility spread 
like wildfire across europe and america.  the /International Research 
Institute For Social Change/ concluded recently that a new breed of 
*"inner directed european"*  is emerging, for whom the freedom to 
achieve full physical and mental potential, and a strong concern about 
the e n v i r o n m e n t are deemed /primary//./  these politically and 
environmentally aware citizens already constitute*/ one third of the 
population/*, are multiplying fast, and might have constituted*/ nearly 
half the population/* as we entered the final decade.  different 
countries proceed at slightly different paces.  britain may lag behind 
the continent on some levels, but is far ahead on the rave front.  on 
the other hand, 34 million americans describe themselves as /"concerned 
with inner growth, including mysticism".

WHAT VISION DO ALL OLD & NEW NEW AGERS SHARE?
new agers and new^2 agers, then, are fired with a vision of the 
incredible future humanity could enjoy if we can admit our mistakes and 
change in time.  although new agers come in 2 varieties (those with 
their roots in the hippy revolution, and the current house consciousness 
craze which is about to sweep the whole of western civilisation) all are 
concerned with personal and planetary transformation and believe that 
woManity is finally realising its potential to heal body, mind, spirit 
and planet.

former wage slaves, voluntarily or not, begin to take an interest in 
self-development.  in the old days only a relative minority seemed to 
evolve to this point.  but the human species/ itself /has been evolving, 
and today's situation now requires that /everyone/ evolve to this 
point... /and beyond/.  

today anyone may be made redundant, suffer a personal loss, glimpse a 
radical insight during therapy or on a recreational drug, read radical 
ideas in a new age bestseller, meet a committed new^2 ager at a rave, 
have their conscience activated by something particularly slimy with 
which their company's involved or by a film on endangered wildlife, or 
indeed every time they open a newspaper!

former drop outs simply decide to shoulder their responsibility to learn 
(and then practise) ways of bringing about peaceful, cooperative change 
in society.  this usually involves/ dropping in again,/  possibly in 
more casual, but now more persevering ways.


HOW NEW^2 AGERS DIFFER FROM MERE NEW AGERS
and why it will be them who actually change the world

of the older, more established new agers (often quite successful, more 
committed to and hence not deepdown /wanting/ the present society to 
change - much) the most radical might tell you they expect this rapidly 
building wave to revolutionise our society as much as, say, the 
Renaissance or the Reformation.  but the new house generation of new^2 
agers dismiss those two events as merely early stepping stones towards a 
total new age transformation which has been coming to the boil for year, 
and woMankind will soon, they say, have radically questioned all 
previous assumptions about life, nature, and 'civilisation' or will have 
destroyed hirself.

for new^2 agers it's a matter of change or die.  new agers are into 
improving themselves; new^2 agers are into/ saving/ themselves -/ and/ 
everybody else/!/

new^2 ageism, then, is bringing together all the finest, most attuned 
members of all the assorted and somewhat distorted sub-cults into a mass 
youth movement. punks, goths, mental mentals, mods, football hooligans, 
headbangers, heavy metallics, ravers, romantics, new wavers, style 
victims, shoomers, home boys & fly girls, psychedelicists, funksters, 
love & peacers, lager louts, teds, pimps, rockabillies, rastafarians, 
freestylers, skins, brossettes, nerds, tecno sharons, young farmers, new 
agers, neo-hippies, peace pagans, alchemists, socialists, casuals, 
yondies, yuppies, hippy hoppies, tekkies, conservatives, libs and 
lsd-ers, vegetarians, libertarians, vegans, zippies, execs, trendies, 
growthies, soulies, greenies, animal liberationists, rockers and surf 
nazis.

all these new^2 agers are committing themselves to live and work with 
the everyday knowledge that, if humanity doesn't achieve a total change 
in our world system from competition to cooperation, then the old age 
will destroy us/ all!/


NEW^2 AGERS SAY EVERYONE TODAY HAS A 'NEED TO KNOW'
/our whole civilisation has gone seriously wrong,/ only the spiritually 
evolved innerstand this, and a heavy price will have to be paid one 
day.  thus has taught every wise person in history.  well, that day has 
arrived.  now we all need to know what real wisdom dictates.  and we 
don't have time for half truths, vague approximations and mystical 
mists.  we must ask radical, never-mind-the-bollocks questions like: 
were previous gurus/ /totally clear themselves of the contamination they 
were describing?  or must we pick out the jewels from the/ shit/?

did they mean their message to last for /all time/?  or was it pitched 
for a less /developed/ age than ours?  or for a time when there was 
less/ urgency/?  were they able to speak/ freely,/ did they have to 
/disguise/ anything?  were they recorded /accurately/?  has the 
recording been/ edited /or /tampered with/ by infected historians during 
the hundreds or thousands of years before it reached us?  new^2 ageism, 
in the last analysis, must be the pinnacle, synthesis, and wholistic 
final edit of everything that wisdom or commonsense ever taught, and 
thus is radically, upside-down, to-the-barricades different from mere 
new ageism.

for all previous wisdom, studied by anyone alive today (/and new agers 
have often studied very many indeed!/), was produced and belongs in a 
different historical situation.

/"I have yet many things to say unto you but ye cannot hear them now. 
Howbeit when he, the spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you unto 
all truth...  And he will shew you things to come."  /Jesus./

NEW^2 AGE WISDOM COMPLETES ALL PREVIOUS WISDOM
new^2 agers  understand implicitly that all previous wisdom which 
separates the personal from the planet or vice versa, is now outdated.  
try it for yourself.  name a single teacher who ever taught that the 
kingdom of god is /out there!/  yet it both/ is,/ and /must be!/  
imagine for a moment the situation any aware ancient found when he 
"awoke" and started looking around with clear, objective eyes.  he found 
a world under the rule of conquest and the sword, steeped in the divine 
right of kings, with a coterie of land-owners lording it over a mass of 
uneducated peasants, with comfortable "priests" or "holy men" teaching 
"detachment" who could simply move on to the next valley when things got 
too bloody in this one.

now, though they would/ almost certainly /have understood how human 
beings were/ meant /to live, they had to face the fact that humanity 
would need/ generations /to learn from its errors and /e/volv/e/, as a 
species, to a stage where they were /ready/ to hear such stuff.  such as 
today!  thus, in the hindu ramayana, one of the oldest holy books still 
in existence, when general arjuna agonised over doing battle with his 
own brothers, his god krishna could advise him that his duty was to get 
on with his job - that of a member of the warrior caste.  /"it is not 
your business to worry about such things. this is just the way the world 
turns. even the brahmins and philosophers don't waste energy worrying 
about it."/

/but here's the point:/ today arjuna is a general in US Nuclear Strike 
Force One, finger poised on the armageddon button, agonising over 
killing his own brothers and sisters.  /is krishna telling him it's none 
of his business?!/

is jesus telling him to render unto caesar the things that are 
caesar's?  new^2 agers say /no, a million times no!!!/  wisdom glitches 
like these constitute humanity's greatest danger.  there are people, in 
the military, in commerce, in government, who /do/ believe it's their 
moral duty, /"if necessary"/, to destroy the planet; people who are 
destroying a bit more every day, as well as people who are letting it 
happen year after year because they're too busy working at feeling 
/spiritual /inside like their religion taught them.  new^2 agers are 
that rapidly growing movement of people who have accepted passionately 
that heaven's a potential we feel inside which it is our duty to/ //help 
achieve outside// /- on this earth.  FULL STOP.

any so-called wisdom that says different is outdated, partial, or just 
plain wrong.  what krishna is telling arjuna today is: /"don't quote me 
out of context, matey! that heaven-within shit was for an isolated 
valley in an age of bows & arrows. your duty's to the planet, general,

WHAT/ IS /TRUE WISDOM TELLING US, THEN?
the enlightened Ancient, grokking that humanity was/ nowhere near /ready 
for the fully participative democracy hir vision told hir was its 
birthright, had two choices: keep mouth shut and not even bother.  the 
local potentate could run him out of town if he made too much fuss.  
look what happened to socrates, and that's supposed to have been a 
democracy! /^OR / try to describe it to his closest students.  but how 
to talk about one world when even they had never visited the next/ 
valley?/ 

and so a fantastic rumour began to spread among WoMankind, an often 
distorted and almost incredible vision of a state that could be achieved 
among all human beings, a dream of democracy, an equality of rights and 
responsibilities.  it was passed secretively, exclusively underground 
from generation to generation, the most radical and subversive idea on 
the planet, never-but-never to be discussed in public.  and, of course, 
/never to be written down!/  so all previous wisdom is actually the 
public stuff that was suitable for family viewing! (/"look, look, my 
little meditation group is really quite harmless - i teach them that 
heaven's/ within/  and all you need is love!"/)


CHURCH & STATE PROMOTED THE TRUTH THAT SUITED /THEM/
by the time of the monotheistic roman christian monopoly, the wrong 
turn, had become so serious that all teachers had to labour under threat 
of denunciation, arrest, torture and outright burning.  what were the 
authorities/ really/ so afraid of that they burned 9 million 
dissidents?  think about it for yourself, never mind the experts or the 
bollocks.  if /you/ are living in the big house on the hill, you're not 
going to tell the peasants down in the valley that we're all equal, now 
are you?  nor are you going to allow any tinker troubadour and his 'gang 
of students' to tell them.  'course not, you cut the buggers' heads 
off!  /not /because you believe yonder half-wit king james is chosen by 
god, let's be serious, nobody was defending anything as daft or as 
mystical as the divine right of kings; they were defending the might of 
kings and /themselves/ to /continue to rule/. 

by now it had become totally incumbent on the truly wise man to teach 
his students to hide their light.  the world outside was /indeed/ a 
/hypocritically insane and violent place/, and the christian god really 
/was/ a jealous god, verily even as he advertised.  indeed it must have 
seemed to all but the most imaginative and inspired teachers as if 
things were actually getting /worse/ and would /never/ improve. 

for all these very sensible and self-preserving reasons, then, all 
previous forms of wisdom have stressed the personal, selfish view of 
salvation.  seek the kingdom of heaven /inside/, they've told us, know 
thyself, to thine own self be true, the spiritual path, the light 
within, the inner truth, inner wisdom, your inner guide, inner self, 
overself, higher self, blessed are the shat-on for they shall get what's 
coming to them when they die.

thus, with hope or heaven relegated within, we have been brainwashed to 
see our /beautiful blue- green planet/ as the materialistic world of 
illusion, maya, a dance, a dream, a pain factory, none of your goddamn 
business, tend your garden, live for the moment, charity begins at home, 
don't covet your neighbour's wife, trust in the laud, blessed are the 
meek for they shall inherit the earth./ _(_//_bullshit, brothers!)_/  at 
the/ very/ best, wisdom promised (but only if you keep any hopes to 
yourself and act like a good sheep all your life) there's a judgement 
day a comin' which will set all things to order (but no way in /your/ 
lifetime!) /well, that day has arrived!//

NOW WE HAVE TO MAKE HEAVEN HERE ON EARTH
such a split between inner growth & outer improvement is now not just 
dated but/ //dangerous//!/  for now the ACCUMULATED judgement is here, 
and we pay the price of that wrong turn on every side, in our air & 
water, our earth & food, our psychology & our very souls, /everywhere/. 

the pleading screaming raging fucking sobbing crazy blissed-out scream 
of our beautiful bluegreen planetbody is /not/ for a nation of 
spiritually odorised initiates secretly preserving wisdom by "working on 
themselves" [as if "themselves" were different from this egg we all 
share].  it needs everyone, but every single awakening individual, to 
shine their light, to cry their beliefs _from the ^ rooftops, to employ 
every means short of violence to build heaven on earth. 

verily, for new^2 agers, it's heaven or hell on earth.  /you/ can try to 
grab your own little shard of salvation amidst the cosmic chemical 
rubble of your brothers and sisters if you want, arjuna, but new^2 agers 
/care/ about our world, and new^2 age wisdom says there's no personal 
salvation.  that was only ever relatively true.  today either everyone's 
saved, or everyone's lost.  for the first time in our history everyone 
can now see what only the wisest could see before, namely that we are 
are all in this /together!/ (and psssst, /don't/ keep it secret!!!)

miracles are n/eeded/ miracles can be /expected/ and miracles are 
/happening/.

sufficient climate policies enjoy political support only in times of 
rapid economic growth.  Yet this very 'growth' is the primary factor 
driving greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental ills.  The 
growth machine has pushed the planet well beyond its ecological carrying 
capacity, and unless constrained, can only lead to human extinction and 
an end to complex life.

With every economic downturn, like the one now looming in the United 
States, it becomes more difficult and less likely that policy sufficient 
to ensure global ecological sustainability will be embraced.  This essay 
explores the possibility that from a biocentric viewpoint of needs for 
long-term global ecological, economic and social sustainability, it 
would be better for the economic collapse to come now rather than later.

Economic growth is a deadly disease upon the Earth, with capitalism as 
its most virulent strain.  Throw-away consumption and explosive 
population growth are made possible by using up fossil fuels and 
destroying ecosystems.  Holiday shopping numbers are covered by media in 
the same breath as Arctic ice melt, ignoring their deep connection.  
Exponential economic growth destroys ecosystems and pushes the biosphere 
closer to failure.

Humanity has proven itself unwilling and unable to address climate 
change and other environmental threats with necessary haste and ambition.

Action on coal, forests, population, renewable energy and emission 
reductions could be taken now at net benefit to the economy.  Yet, the 
losers -- primarily fossil fuel industries and their bought oligarchy -- 
successfully resist futures not dependent upon their deadly products.

Perpetual economic growth, and necessary climate and other ecological 
policies, are fundamentally incompatible.  Global ecological 
sustainability depends critically upon establishing a steady state 
economy, whereby production is right-sized to not diminish natural 
capital.  Whole industries like coal and natural forest logging will be 
eliminated even as new opportunities emerge in solar energy and 
environmental restoration.

This critical transition to both economic and ecological sustainability 
is simply not happening on any scale.  The challenge is how to carry out 
necessary environmental policies even as economic growth ends and 
consumption plunges.  The natural response is going to be liquidation of 
even more life- giving ecosystems, and jettisoning of climate policies, 
to vainly try to maintain high growth and personal consumption.

We know that humanity must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 
80% over coming decades.  How will this and other necessary climate 
mitigation strategies be maintained during years of economic downturns, 
resource wars, reasonable demands for equitable consumption, and 
frankly, the weather being more pleasant in some places?  If efforts to 
reduce emissions and move to a steady state economy fail; the collapse 
of ecological, economic and social systems is assured.

Bright greens take the continued existence of a habitable Earth with 
viable, sustainable populations of all species including humans as the 
ultimate truth and the meaning of life.  Whether this is possible in a 
time of economic collapse is crucially dependent upon whether enough 
ecosystems and resources remain post collapse to allow humanity to 
recover and reconstitute sustainable, relocalised societies.

It may be better for the Earth and humanity's future that economic 
collapse comes sooner rather than later, while more ecosystems and 
opportunities to return to nature's fold continue to exist.  Economic 
collapse will be deeply wrenching -- part Great Depression, part African 
famine.  There will be starvation and civil strife, and a long period of 
suffering and turmoil.

Many will be killed as balance returns to the Earth.  Most people have 
forgotten how to grow food and that their identity is more than what 
they own.  Yet there is some justice, in that those who have lived most 
lightly upon the land will have an easier time of it, even as those 
super-consumers living in massive cities finally learn where their food 
comes from and that ecology is the meaning of life.  Economic collapse 
now means humanity and the Earth ultimately survive to prosper again.

Human suffering -- already the norm for many, but hitting the currently 
materially affluent -- is inevitable given the degree to which the 
planet's carrying capacity has been exceeded.  We are a couple decades 
at most away from societal strife of a much greater magnitude as the 
Earth's biosphere fails.  Humanity can take the bitter medicine now, and 
recover while emerging better for it; or our total collapse can be a 
final, fatal death swoon.

A successful revolutionary response to imminent global ecosystem 
collapse would focus upon bringing down the Earth's industrial economy 
NOW.  As society continues to fail miserably to implement necessary 
changes to allow creation to continue, maybe the best strategy is 
economic sabotage to hasten the day.  It is more fragile than it looks.

Humanity is a marvelous creation.  Yet her current dilemma is 
unprecedented.  It is not yet known whether she is able to adapt, at 
some expense to her comfort and short-term well- being, to ensure 
survival.  If she can, all futures of economic, social and ecological 
collapse can be avoided.  If not it is better from a long-term 
biocentric viewpoint that the economic growth machine collapse now, 
bringing forth the necessary change, and offering hope for a planetary 
and human revival.

I wish no harm to anyone, and want desperately to avoid these prophesies 
foretold by ecological science.  I speak for the Earth, for despite 
being the giver of life, her natural voice remains largely unheard over 
the tumult.

A Surge of More Lies

A new troubling myth has taken hold in Washington.  According to the 
mainstream media, Republicans, and unfortunately even some Democrats, 
the President's surge in Iraq has been a resounding success.  Nothing 
could be further from the truth.

The assertion is disingenuous, factually incorrect, and negatively 
impacts America's national security.  The Surge had a clear and defined 
objective - to create stability and security - enabling the Iraqi 
government to enact lasting political solutions and foster genuine 
reconciliation and cooperation between Sunnis, Shias, and Kurds.

This has not happened.

There has been negligible political progress in Iraq, and we are no 
closer to solving the complex problems - including a power sharing 
government, oil revenue agreement and new constitution - than we were 
before the Administration upped the ante and sent 30,000 extra troops to 
Iraq.

Of course raising troop levels has increased security - a strategy the 
Bush administration ignored when presented by General Shinseki before 
the war in Iraq began - but the fundamental internal Iraqi problems 
remain.  The reduction in violence, in fact, has exposed the continuing 
failure of Iraqi officials to solve their substantial political rifts.  
By President Bush's own stated goal of political progress, the Surge has 
failed.  For, despite the efforts of American soldiers, the surge alone 
can never bring about the required political solutions.

As it stands, little on the ground supports the assertion that Iraqis 
are ready to stand up and govern themselves.  Too few Iraqi troops are 
trained, equipped and combat ready, and they cannot yet provide adequate 
security.  Loyalty is also an issue in the Iraqi army as Al Queda and 
Sunni insurgents infiltrate their defense forces.  The consequences 
turned deadly just recently when an Iraqi soldier purposely killed two 
U.S. troops.

In Baghdad and Mosul, the Sunni and Shia factions have paused their 
fighting, awaiting guarantees and protections that have not yet been 
delivered.  As Iraqi refugees return, there is no mechanism to help them 
rebuild their lives, nor recover their now-occupied homes.  
Neighborhoods once mixed are now segregated.

In Northern Iraq, Kurdish terrorists conducting nefarious operations 
across the border into Turkey have compelled our NATO ally to strike at 
bases, inflaming tensions between Baghdad and Ankara.

Further, while the Administration over-commits American forces in Iraq, 
we see Al Qaeda-regrouping and Osama Bin Laden still at large.  We 
remain seriously bogged down in Afghanistan, and are witnessing a crisis 
in Pakistan that has left a nuclear country on the brink of a meltdown.

The surge is working?  America suffered more U.S. casualties in 2007 
than in any other year of the war.  It can't afford any more of this 
type of success.

The situation most likely to deliver political progress is not by 
continuing the surge and occupation but (there is no guarantee) by 
putting real pressure on the Iraqi government to force action.  Telling 
the national and local Iraqi leaders that we are withdrawing our troops 
can help accomplish this goal.  Today, the majority Iraqi Shia 
government led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has little incentive to 
act when American troops remain in the country to provide security and 
stability.

Based on the Administration's plan, John McCain's proposal of a 100-year 
US occupation could be a reality!

backlash against incandescent bulbs?
You'll have spotted that there's a backlash against the proposed phasing 
out of incandescent bulbs?  Energy efficient bulbs apparently poison you 
with mercury, cause epilepsy and migraine, and even cancer, and the skin 
professionals are allegedly up in arms [well one person quoted in the 
Mail] over light-sensitive patients - can you believe these dumb clucks?

Light sensitive people are used to coping with their problem and no one 
is suggesting they be exposed to long periods of energy efficient bulbs 
just for the hell of it.  The mercury is truly minute and hundreds of 
bulbs would have to be smashed to get a measurable amount.  They are 
less flickery than fluorescent tubes; which is what they're basing the 
epileptic allegation on, and having lived with them for over 20 years I 
can say they have had nil effect on our health.

I'm interested in the psychology of those who have to criticise every 
green move.  They're always right wing, and they appear to see it as a 
leftist conspiracy [have you noticed?] despite most leftists being as 
slow as everyone else to cotton on to what's in store if we don't 
change.  But the loony critics are always of the right.
