> “Ithaca, the Beacon of Hope: Examining a Hub of Emancipation “ -
> Presented by the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity
>
> The Brothers from the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
> Inc. will visit Southside Community Center in an effort to
> illuminate some of the historical identity of the city of Ithaca as
> part of Black History Month. The Alpha Chapter, having started here
> in the city of Ithaca at Cornell University, recognizes the
> significance of Ithaca on creating a culture such that the
> Fraternity could form and be sustained for over a century now. By
> looking at the relationship between the origin of the Fraternity and
> the social climate in Ithaca, its expansion, and some of the events
> in Black History to date that has been impacted by the Fraternity,
> we hope to accentuate the significance of Ithaca in the Black
> experience.

> “Nuthin New Under the Sun: the African Aesthetic and Africanist
> principles retained in contemporary hip-hop culture” Presented by
> Darryl “Mongoose” Johnson
>
> This presentation will explore the themes and specific cultural
> traits that contribute to Hip-Hop’s place among the various African
> Diasporic art forms by providing a lens through which hip-hop can be
> appreciated as a continuum of the African aesthetic. Participants
> will be encouraged to initiate discussion and continue dialogue with
> regards to some of the most contemporary artisans representing the
> craft to date. Our discussion will circulate among our
> interpretations of listening examples and provided visuals with the
> goal in mind to broaden the scope we employ to critique and
> appreciate the culture we developed and sustain as African diasporic
> peoples. Ase!!

> "The African Diaspora's Dance"-Presented by Sabia McCoy Torres
> In celebration of Black History month, "The African Diaspora's
> Dance" will consider African diasporic dance throughout the
> Americas. In this part of the lecture series we will trace the paths
> of Africans from the continent to the Americas and consider the
> dances that connect the descendents of uprooted and relocated
> peoples to their ancestral land and to each other across space and
> time. We will talk about characteristics of the African dance
> aesthetic and look at some moves to see how they are visible in
> contemporary dance of African diasporic peoples. My hope is that
> attendees will get an idea of how connected to one another people
> from African descent truly are (whether they be in the U.S., Puerto
> Rico, or Brazil) and how this connection is made visible through our
> dance; and furthermore how the African origins of our dance reveals
> that certain cultural traditions have survived slavery, colonialism,
> and our dispersal around the world.
