[ShareTompkins] Internet Provider Alternatives to the Big Bullies

A couple months ago I wrote to ShareTompkins and IFNcafe folks asking for
information about ISPs, since I was loathe to go with Verizon or TimeWarner who
among other things ask for SSNs -- the entire number, not just the last four...
[Although I didn't apply with T-W, I did with one of the smaller companies who
uses T-W's infrastructure -- and T-W in order to install, insisted on the SSN,
otherwise no deal. Perhaps they do that to get people to turn to them in
desperation, no idea.]

Anyhoo, the two alternatives I received from individual responders in this group
were LightLink and ClarityConnect. It took six weeks for the latter one to come
and do a site survey where I live in City of Ithaca, but it was worth the wait.
For broadband, I'm only paying 29.95 a month, no contract -- plus installation
fee (and unlike T-W, and maybe verizon, there really was something to install,
as opposed to just flicking a switch or something), and they didn't ask for my
SSN.

It was hard not to have internet at home for six weeks, but such a good feeling
not having to deal with corporate monopolistic bullies...

Anyway, for what it's worth...
