> Commuting With Kids...On the Bus!
>
> Alli and her son Khai on their way to drop him off at preschool.
> By Sarah Paez
>
> Allison “Alli” Sribarra has been using alternate forms of transportation for most of her adult life. When she and her husband moved from a neighborhood in Maryland with easily accessible public transportation to Ithaca, Alli immediately found a carpool to work through Zimride. Six months later, they moved to Danby and finding a carpool proved challenging. However, she found a bus route that was only a short walk away, and has been using that to commute to work ever since.
>
> Alli takes the bus four days a week, and on most days she brings her children—a two-year-old and a five-month-old—with her. On bringing her children on the bus with her, Alli says, “It’s not as hard as you might think it is, because TCAT and other people are just really, really helpful…the other people on the bus are always trying to help me juggle strollers.”
>
> Taking the bus to and from work allows the Sribarras to remain a one-car family, which, according to AAA, helps them save thousands of dollars every year, and reduces their carbon pollution significantly. Additionally, Alli said taking the bus helps her with exercise, because she walks about a half a mile to the bus stop and back. “With two kids, walking to the bus is my only exercise,” she says.
>
> One challenge Alli faced while navigating the TCAT website was figuring out which fare option was best for her. “It took some time for me to do the math to figure out which bus pass I needed,” she says. “I now have a bus pass for zone 1 and zone 2,” which ended up being more cost-effective for her.
>
> “Driving is very isolating,” says Alli. “When I’m on the bus, sometimes I read, sometimes I chat with people on the bus.” Because Danby is a more rural part of Tompkins County, Alli says riding the bus has helped build relationships with the bus-riding regulars in Danby.
>
> Riding the bus has also helped her build relationships with her children. “On days that I have my kids with me it’s a nice bonding time for us, because we’ll look out the windows or read a book,” she says.
>
> When she stepped off the bus one summer morning, she leaned down to her two-year-old son Khai and said, “We’re lucky because we know how to take the bus, right?” Khai nodded and smiled.

> TCAT Offers Bus Service to State Parks
> Seven-Day Summer Service
> TCAT's Route 22 now provides service to all three state parks--Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, and Robert H. Treman State Parks--seven days of the week. Saturday and Sunday service will continue through Sunday, September 6, and Monday through Friday service will continue through Friday, August 21. Because the Finger Lakes State Park Region has constructed a better entryway into Treman Park, Route 22 can now pick up and deliver passengers directly at the park's office. This eliminates the quarter mile walk passengers would normally make to get to Treman's trailheads and swimming area. Read more about this special summer route here.
