> Participants will have an eGauge meter installed for free in their home which will measure detailed information about all the electricity your home uses. The resulting data is available to you the homeowner, and also is securely transferred to Pecan Street where it is anonymized to Department Of Energy standards and provided to researchers.

> Researchers around the world are very interested in this unique highly granular data for understanding how residential electricity load is divided between uses (water heating, refrigeration, air conditioning dishwashing, lights, etc) within a home. This data can help researchers understand how to innovate new ways to design ‘smarter’ homes that use less energy. Pecan Street is looking to get at least 100 homes that fit their criteria for the local test bed. If your home meets their needs, they will be contacting you directly in early 2019.

> In general, participating in Pecan Street's programs requires minimal time or effort. Step one involves scheduling an appointment to have a certified master electrician install the eGauge <https://www.egauge.net/home-energy-monitor/> home energy monitoring system. This installation takes 4 - 6 hours. During this appointment, the electrician will install the eGauge device inside or adjacent to your breaker panel and check that all the circuits are labeled correctly. To transmit the data, the installer will then run an ethernet cable from your router to a HomePlug, approximately the size of a deck of cards, that will need to to be plugged into a nearby outlet. Finally, you will receive an email from Pecan Street with directions on how to begin viewing your energy use in real-time. As the program carries on, we ask our volunteer network to complete an annual survey (usually about 20 min in length), and you will occasionally hear from us if your device falls offline and stops sending data to our secure servers. This typically occurs when the HomePlug is accidentally unplugged or when there are changes to the WiFi network.
