Hi

First post - hello all!

I was reading on Slashdot today an interesting story about creating Live
Linux distributions for disaster areas:

http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/10/04/1814253&tid=106

Of course the hacklab isn't a disaster area at all - :o) - but there are a
small number of similar problems to be solved e.g. providing ICT
facilities to a number of users using sub-optimal equipment etc.

The Slashdot article points to this article here:

http://arstechnica.com/guides/tweaks/disaster-livecd.ars

which has some very interesting information and some other links e.g.

http://www.publicwebstations.com/

I haven't drawn many conclusions so far but having visited the hacklab
recently and having done a little research in this area for work purposes
I hope to experiment with installing some small footprint Linuxes in the
hacklab such as:

http://www.goosee.com/puppy/
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

These small distros typically take up about 50MB space so they can run
completely in RAM and might prove a more effective distro on those
machines that are currently struggling with Ubuntu/Mandrake etc.

I hope to get to Matilda on Thursday night at about 7:30pm to do some tests.

All the best

FLG
