[SSC] SSC Digest, Vol 14, Issue 8 (Scholar expression of interest)

Just a note on the DPA/FoI. This may be redundant as I missed the last 2
meetings.

Given that the Data Protection Act frames the gathering and processing
of information about people with legal requirements, and requires that
these data are handled securely throughout life cycle, do we need a
named "records manager"? I'm thinking about if/when requests under FoI
come in.

There is a DMU blog on this at: https://infogov.our.dmu.ac.uk/

In solidarity,

Richard.

Thanks for sending this through, Sandie - it looks good.

Following our discussion about this at yesterday's meeting, I checked
the site re: data protection and we do already have a note about this
there (http://socialsciencecentre.org.uk/join/).

I also noticed that the online form follows broadly the same format as
the one we are calling the expression of interest, but is framed as a
form for becoming a member of the Centre rather than applying to study,
which seemed to be the direction of yesterday's discussion. People
wanting to join initially as students can select an 'academic'
membership there, as can academics who want to join -- the
distinguishing point being whether they want to be actively involved in
running the Centre in any capacity or rather have an Associate
membership. In both cases, the inviation join a centre to 'be part of a
unique experiment in higher education'. This is very much in the spirit
of the Centre's objectives, and I think the new version of the paper
form communicates that as well. I just wanted to call attention back to
the one that we all filled out on the website and ask whether others
feel our discussions about students yesterday reflected that spirit of
cooperative membership, or trended towards something more hierarchical?

Best wishes,

Sarah

Hi all

Following our discussion yesterday, I have redesigned the scholar
'expression of interest' form, to reflect our thinking that it should
not look like a UCAS form, should allow for some creativity, and
regarding personal details, require only name and contact address/
email. Any thoughts welcome: it's not perfect yet, but I think we could
work with it. I have suggested it is submitted by 31st March - is this
allowing enough time?

I also booked Croft St Community Centre for the next Saturday meeting,
17th March, 12 noon - 4pm again. I assume we can use Mint St for the
Feb 15th evening meeting? Has someone checked this?
