Inquiry groups on quality, dialogue and pedagogy

>From the SSC meeting on 4 February 2012

To further our thinking about how we work through issues of evaluating 'quality' in the Social Science Centre, we had some short discussions around three ideas that have been flagged as important in recent meetings: dialogue, quality and pedagogy. Attached are notes on the discussions, outlining feedback, possible questions to explore, and suggestions for how we might explore them in inquiry groups.

Inquiry groups offer one way of organising a coherent process of reflection, study and dialogue about complex questions in a collective. They can be organised in whatever way works, but typically involve a number of elements: (1) identifying a concept, question or problem that people feel it is important to explore, (2) deciding on concrete ways of exploring them - through e.g. reading, reflecting, mapping, writing, (3) spending an agreed amount of time exploring them, (4) sharing working conclusions with others and creating any materials that may be needed or desired - could be papers, toolkits, etc., and (5) developing further work from this basis.

We'd like to try exploring some of the questions raised in this way, starting (pretty arbitrarily) with dialogue. If you're interested, or know anyone else who might be, please say via the SSC discussion list so we can organise!
