[SSC] How to set up a Co-operative university

Hi,

I am an activist and academic currently based in Leeds. I think that what you have achieved at the SSC Lincoln is truly inspiring, so firstly solidarity and congrats to all involved.

As part of a recent three day strike at Leeds University, we organised a ‘teach-out’ seminar / lecture programme in lieu of cancelled classes. Of course, the content was much more interesting than the sanitised curricula one increasingly finds in the neo-liberal university, and both staff and students who participated were all energised by this experience of interdisciplinary, autonomous, and most importantly, free education.

There is a big appetite (there are four universities worth of students and staff in Leeds) to continue this project in some form. It would be great to realise something like the SCC in Leeds.

I guess I’m tentatively and naively asking the list how one would even begin to embark upon such a project?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

In solidarity,
Richard Hudson-Miles
