Thank you very much for your kind reply, r7
In fact, i am already a member of Triac, a Barcelona-based translators'
association which has still little political relevance as a lobby in
favour of translators' rights, in our dealings with publishers, clients,
agencies... CNT in Spain has a very wide section for the self-employed,
where everyone is mixed up: taxi drivers with printers& translators.
Their social security schemes are appalling for any freelancer. The
monthly payments we are supposed to make to the social security (without
any kind of unemployment benefit in practice) would amount to 150
pounds, regardless of your monthly income. That is minimum and
compulsory. Most freelancer translators like myself therefore have no
social security because they can't pay. With all nationality and
qualification requirements. Now i am a resident in this fair city where
things might be better in that respect but worse in others... treated
many times as an overseas visitor, suspicious of money laundering and
any crime. First to fall under the scythe of compulsory IDs. Treated as
nothing, even if i have a british partner and british son (not here
unfortunately with us). Struggling to start up a partnership so as to
continue working as usual. Coping with lies and false promises, no
financial support because the start up business has no bank records and
things like that.

What i expect from a trade union? Protection against government abuse.

Thank you for this opportunity to burst out. (?)
You are very kind.

Amp
